General Shivdev Singh Diwan Gurbachan Singh Khalsa College Patiala was established in 1960 with a vision to serve the society in a unique way. Music as a subject (vocal as well and instrument) was introduced in the year 1994.This is the first college in Punjab to start the "Tabla" as a subject from 2018.Since then the Department of Music Vocal is doing all out effort

s to promote Indian Classical Music.The Department of vocal music is truly an unmatched, remarkable and outstanding component of the institution. The experience of learning in the department is truly very unique for the students as they pursue their academics at one hand and they learn classical vocal music on the other hand. "Guru-Shishye Parampara". The teachers who worked hard for the development of the department were Prof.Harjas Kaur, Prof.Manjeet Kaur, Prof. Kanwaljit Singh & Dr. Jagjit Singh. Currently the department is working and progressing under the supervision of Dr. Gauri Khanna (01-04-2025 to till the date). From time to time the department has shown a remarkable progress, it’s with the blessings of almighty, and the management has started Master of Arts (Hindustani Classical Music) from session 2014-2015. Presently fifteen students are pursuing their carrier in Indian Classical Music. The management has started Tabla as a additional subject (Indian Percussion Instrument) from session 2018-2019. The present infrastructure of the department includes well-furnished Vocal room with modern facilities like wifi internet, modern electronic gadgets etc. Apart from the main library the department has its own library. The reading and lending section of the main library has numerous books, some of them are old as well as priceless, and providing the valuable material for regular as well as research oriented study. The management of the college in principle has decided to establish a state of the art recording studio so that the students will be made familiar with modern techniques of recording.

The auspicious occasion of Baisakhi Utsav was celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm on 11 April 2026 at Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib, Anandpur Sahib.

Students of the P.G. Department of Music (Vocal), Khalsa College, Patiala actively participated in this sacred samagam and showcased their exceptional talent. The students presented Shabad Gayan and Vaar Gayan with great dedication and spiritual fervor, which deeply impressed the audience.

The event was graced by the esteemed dignitaries of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, including the respected Pradhan Sahib, Advocate S. Harjinder Singh Dhami, who was present during the performances. He highly appreciated the soulful renditions by the students and acknowledged the sincere efforts and hard work of the teachers.

As a mark of encouragement and appreciation, Advocate S. Harjinder Singh Dhami announced a cash prize of ₹11,000 for the participants of Shabad Gayan.
