This seminar examines the contested and multifaceted relationship between the ethical and the political in Islamic thought, with particular attention to how concepts of moral normativity, sovereignty, and political authority have been theorized and debated across classical and modern contexts.

Drawing on the works of Taha Abdurrahman, Sherman Jackson, Wael Hallaq, Ovamir Anjum, S. Sayyid and Abul A'la Maududi, the seminar explores divergent critiques of state power, ethical subjectivity, and political agency.
