Court issues warrant against sacked Assistant Professor for posting 'defamatory' videos against Director IT KU

Srinagar, June 10, KDC: A Srinagar Court on Saturday issued a bailable warrant against Dr Ab Bari Naik, sacked Assistant Professor, in connection with a case of posting "defamatory" videos against Dr Maroof Qadri, Director Information Technology, Kashmir University.

Dr Naik has allegedly posted a series of videos on his page questioning the qualification of the Director IT, Kashmir University besides accusing him of gifting mobile phones and laptops to the officers to obtain undue favours. The accused is also alleged to be using the words like "Choar, Thug, Mafia" against Maroof Qadri.

The warrant was issued in connection with a defamation case filed by Dr Maroof Qadri alleging the videos uploaded by the accused Dr Bari Naik are aimed to defame and ridicule him and lower his reputation in the society.

Aasif Wani Counsel who appeared for the complainant Director argued that complainant has rendered revolutionary services in the field of Information Technology and his expertise and excellence in the subject has earned him appreciations from not only the Vice Chancellors, who have headed the University from time to time but also from the High-ranking officials of the Government.

The Counsel also referred to various certificates and documents arguing that the complainant has climbed the Career-Ladder on the basis of merit, efficiency and unparalleled devotion to the work.

"The false and unfounded statements made in the videos have caused huge damage to the reputation of the complainant... Levelling such unfounded allegations and portraying complainant as devil is akin to inciting unemployed youth against the complainant, thus putting his personal safety at risk," argued Aasif Wani, Advocate appearing for the complainant.

Feroz Ahmad Khan, Forest Magistrate/JMIC, Srinagar after hearing the Counsel for complainant and after watching the video in open concluded that there is sufficient ground for proceeding against the accused person. The Court in its order according to news agency Kashmir Dot Com said "I am of the considered opinion that there is sufficient ground for proceeding against the accused person for the commission of offence under section 499 read with section 500 IPC. Accordingly registry is directed to issue bailable warrant to the tune of Rs 50, 000/- forwarding the same to SHO Police Station Kulgam for early ex*****on and return for presence of accused."

Pertinently Dr Naik who was an assistant professor of Geography posted at Government Degree College, Women, in Udhampur was last year dismissed from his services for his alleged anti-national activities by the Lt Governor led administration. (KDC)

Under fire, KU relieves two senior professors as HODs after scuffle episode, orders probe by a committee

Srinagar, Apr 5, KNT: Two Kashmir University professors were relieved from the headship of their respective departments on Tuesday following their involvement in a scuffle that led to police complaints against the duo.

As per an order, a copy of which is with KNT, issued by Assistant Registrar Administration-TW said: “Pending enquiry by the constituted committee in the incident vitiating academic atmosphere in the campus on 1.04.2022, Prof Muhammad Yousuf Ganai, Dean School of Social Sciences/Head Department of History and Professor Gul Mohammad Wani, Head Department of Political Sciences are relieved from their respective administrative assignments forthwith.”

The University has assigned the task of Dean School of Social Sciences to Dean Research Prof Irshad Ahmad while assigning the charge of HOD History to Professor Imtiyaz-ul-Haq, Head Department of Economics and charge of HOD Political Sciences to Professor Irshad Ahmad Shah, in-Charge Librarian.

The action by the university administration comes following outcry within and outside the university over the 'shameful' incident on Friday in which Prof Ganai was allegedly assaulted by nephew of Prof Gul Muhammad Wani inside the university campus when the viva of a research scholar was about to be conducted under their supervision.

The two professors allegedly entered into a fistfight while the student community watched the entire episode which also led to exchange of verbal abuses between the two professors.

The matter eventually ended in police station Nigeen which registered two complaints by Prof Ganai and Prof Wani in the matter, while referring the case to a competent court in view of the non-cognisable nature of the offences involved, sources said.

The Court has reportedly bailed out the nephew of Prof Wani against a bail surety while ordering an inquiry into the matter by the Jammu and Kashmir police, they said.

The University authorities had faced severe criticism from within and outside the academic circles for their inaction in the matter since the matter came to the fore last Friday.

Sources in the University said that LG’s office also took a serious note of the matter and sought an urgent report from the Vice-Chancellor. (KNT)
