Invited Lecture on QS Ranking Improvement

An invited lecture on “How to Improve QS Ranking?” was organized by the Office of the Dean (Students’ Welfare), Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology Shibpur, on 21 May 2026 at the Alumni Seminar Hall. The programme aimed to create awareness regarding global university rankings and institutional strategies for academic excellence and international visibility.
The programme commenced with the Welcome Address by Prof. Debdulal Das, Dean (Students’ Welfare), followed by addresses from Prof. Partha Bhattacharyya, HoD, Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, and Prof. Arindam Biswas, Dean (Academic) and Chairman of the Institute Ranking Committee.
Prof. V M S R Murthy, Director, IIEST Shibpur addressed the gathering and shared his strategic vision regarding QS ranking improvement, drawing from his experience and institutional development initiatives at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.
The invited lecture was delivered by Prof. Somnath Chattopadhyaya, HoD, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, under whose leadership the Department secured a rank in the Global QS Ranking. He elaborated to the packed Hall on the “Dhanbad Model” and highlighted how selfless individual contribution, teamwork, research quality, and strategic planning played a key role in improving institutional rankings. He also shared practical strategies for enhancing academic reputation, citations, research visibility, and international engagement.
The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Ankita Pramanik, Associate Dean (Students’ Welfare) and Convenor of the Institute Ranking Committee.

Inauguration of the Renovated Basketball Court

The renovated basketball court at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology Shibpur was inaugurated by Smt. Tejaswini AnanthKumar, Dr. hc., Chairperson, BoG, IIEST Shibpur, in the presence of Prof. VMSR Murthy, Director, IIEST Shibpur, on 17th May 2026. The renovation was made possible through the generous support of the Bengal Engineering College alumni of the B.E. Batch of 2000 and B.Arch. Batch of 2001, reaffirming their enduring bond with the Institute and their commitment towards the development of sports infrastructure.

The renovation initiative was facilitated through the Office of the Dean (Students’ Welfare) and the Dean (International Relations and Alumni Affairs). The upgraded court, equipped with PP interlocking tiles, has been developed at an estimated cost of around ₹11 lakhs. During the programme, the dignitaries encouraged students to actively participate in sports and physical activities for their overall well-being, while alumni and students enthusiastically interacted on the newly inaugurated court.

Celebration of International Museum Day and Inauguration of a Micromuseum at IIEST Shibpur

Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur celebrated the International Museum Day on 18th May, 2026 at the Slater Hall. To mark the occasion, Smt. Tejaswini AnanthKumar, Dr. HC., Chairperson, BoG, IIEST Shibpur inaugurated a Micromuseum, in the room adjacent to the Institute Archive, Slater Hall. The Micromuseum houses historical and scientific artefacts, namely almost a century old bench vice, a seismograph gifted by The California Institute of Technology (Caltech), articles from the era of World War – II, including one aircraft camera, and other priceless articles. During the inauguration, Smt. Tejaswini AnanthKumar, Dr. HC., Chairperson, BoG, IIEST Shibpur remarked that preserving scientific heritage is not about protecting the past alone but is about inspiring students to innovate, discover, and serve the nation through knowledge. Prof. VMSR Murthy, Director, IIEST Shibpur hoped that the Micromuseum will act as a bridge between legacy and innovation. The Mircomuseum is curated by Dr. Bivore Das, Assistant Registrar, IIEST Shibpur. Sri. Dayanidhi Urmaliya, National Advisory Board Member of the Entrepreneurship and Rural Development Centre (ERDC), Prof. Debdulal Das, Dean (Students’ Welfare), IIEST Shibpur, Prof. Chinmoy Bhattacharya, Dean (Faculty Welfare), IIEST Shibpur, faculty members, officers, staff members, students and other enthusiastic participants were present on the occasion.
