The IGNOU North-Eastern Regional Centre at Shillong became functional on 16th April 1988 headed by Dr R.V.Vyas as its first Regional Director.

It was established with the consent of Meghalaya Government. The entire North East Region of the country was under the jurisdiction of this centre. It was known as the North East Regional Centre of the Indira Gandhi National Open University. In the month of March 1996, the Guwahati Regional Centre of the University was set up to look after the student support services in the states of Assam, Aruna

chal Pradesh and Sikkim. As a result the jurisdiction of the Shillong Regional centre was remained with five states viz. Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura. From the year 2000-2001, under the North-East Educational Development Project (NEEDP), IGNOU Regional Centre was established in each of the north eastern states including Sikkim. Thus, IGNOU Regional Centre Shillong was left with the responsibility of looking after the Student Support Services within the state of Meghalaya only.

IGNOU RC Shillong has been observing Vigilance Awareness Week (28th Oct to 3rd Nov. 2024). As a part of the awareness week, we organized today, the 30th October, 2024 at 2.30pm a special lecture on the topic " Ethics and Governance" in the Conference Hall of the IGNOU Regional Centre, Shillong , NEHU Campus, Shillong. The resource person was Dr. Naveen Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Law, NEHU, Shillong. Officers and staff of IGNOU RC and REC Shillong attended the programme.

As a part of observance of the Swachhata Hi Seva programme, IGNOU Regional Centre Shillong organized a webinar on the topic “Solid Waste Management”. The speaker of of the webinar was Dr. Ganesh Chandra Dhal, Assistant Professor, NIT Meghalaya. Staff of Regional Centre Shillong and students of MSCENV programme participated the webinar.

IGNOU Regional Centre Shillong celebrated the National Innovation Day 2024 by organising the programme “Sharing of Success Story” by Joshua B. Phanwar, an Entrepreneur & Co-founder of 7th Solutions, an IT Software Development Firm. The programme was conduced in OFFLINE mode at the Conference Hall of the Regional Centre. Students, officers and staff of IGNOU RC & REC Shillong attended the programme.

On the occasion of the World Mental Health Day 2024, IGNOU Regional Centre Shillong organized a webinar on “Understanding Mental Health and Its Importance” on Thursday, 10th October, 2024. The talk was delivered by Dr. Bhanita Boro, Senior Medical & Health Officer, Jhargaon BPHC, Assam. Officers, staff of IGNOU RC & REC Shillong and students attended the webinar.
