It was a time when Assam was having only a few Institutions of its kind and there was a great dearth for technical personnel in the state. The Institution was established with the objective of preparing personnel for manning the engineering departments and industries of the country which requires adequate knowledge in know-how and do-how of engineering and technology. One of the pioneer institutes
of Assam, Silchar Polytechnic started its journey on 1st May 1960, in a very modest way with scanty staff members and with Civil Engineering as the lone department. Today it feels proud to be one of the best institutions with good infrastructure and well motivated staffs. Spread over fifteen hectares of pleasant land area, Silchar Polytechnic is having a unique institutional complex with good academic environment and result. It is a purely government institution approved by AICTE. The Institution is also performing different activities under its ISTE Chapter and ISTE Student's Chapter for keeping themselves aware about the activities of the professional bodies. At the same time in keeping with its focus on technical education, the Training and Placement Cell is working in the wide field of education including IT sector, manpower development through awareness programs, supply skilled manpower to various Organizations & companies and campus interviews by several industrial Houses. Silchar Polytechnic was selected by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India in 1986 for Community Polytechnic Scheme to provide technical support to the poorer people of rural areas by utilizing institutional infrastructure & expertise and thereby encouraging self-employment & entrepreneurship. The Scheme continued for more than 20 years. In their last visit, the AICTE Expert Committee views " Excellent Institution, faculty & staff are very motivated and hard working." Silchar Polytechnic celebrated its 50th Anniversary in the year 2010 with a variety of socio-cultural and development programs to mark the upcoming of a glorious future.
