Ashoka Philosophy Society

Ashoka Philosophy Society Ashoka University's Philosophy Society. We’ve organised this conference so that Philosophy students from across the country get to talk to each other.

We want to create a platform for undergraduates to present and discuss their work. In effect: this is your conference! If your paper is selected, you’ll be one of the presenters at the conference. In addition, we’ll have guest speakers from DU, JNU, and Jadavpur University. These professors specialise in a variety of fields, including Logic in Indian Philosophy, Philosophy of Language, and Metaphy

sics of the Self. You’ll have the chance to hear about their work, and they’ll hear about yours! Since this is a student conference, papers will be peer-reviewed by members of Ashoka’s Philosophy Society. All papers will be reviewed anonymously.

"I’m hostile to the pursuit of originality in legal philosophy—and also in most other areas of philosophy" — an interview with Les Green (Oxford) on a variety of topics in and related to law.

The conceptual question whether trans-women count as women is another matter. (So too, the ‘metaphysical’ question, if there is such a thing, whether trans-women are women.) On this issue, I hew to Simone de Beauvoir’s view that our concept ‘woman’ includes an important path-dependent elem...

"I feel as if I am… someone you can trust because [I am a scientist] honest enough to admit that the scientific enterprise has limitations—which doesn’t mean it’s weak!" — physicist Marcelo Gleiser (Dartmouth), the winner of the 2019 Templeton Prize, cautions against scientism & other departures from humility.

In conversation, the 2019 Templeton Prize winner does not pull punches on the limits of science, the value of humility and the irrationality of nonbelief

When it comes to talking about bodies, "the supposed conflict between trans inclusion and feminism rests on a simplistic understanding that ignores individual difference" — Ray Briggs (Stanford) and B R George (CMU) offer tools with which to “engage critically with alarmist reports about the ‘trans language police’”.

Some critics say that terms such as ‘chestfeeding’ and ‘front hole’ erase cis women’s identities. Here’s why we disagree

God's limits — Peter Atterton (San Diego State) on the coherence of the idea of a morally perfect, all-powerful, all-knowing God.

Perfect. All-powerful. All-knowing. The idea of the deity most Westerners accept is actually not coherent.

Using cognitive psychology to show that philosophical concepts "are in certain important respects like natural kind concepts, rather than being built around mental definitions" — Michael Strevens (NYU) is blogging at Brains this week.

I want to argue that philosophical analysis, a.k.a. the method of cases, is a worthy pursuit: that it reliably gives us substantial knowledge. The linchpin of my strategy is an appeal to cognitive …

Philosopher Luciano Floridi (Oxford) is part of a new independent panel set up by Google to review its AI projects and plans — it’s called the Advanced Technology External Advisory Council (ATEAC).

A team that includes philosophers, engineers, and policy experts will determine how ethical Google’s AI projects are—but some have already criticized its makeup.

"Feminists have finally started to realize that the varied experiences of trans women have a thing or two to teach us" — Carol Hay (U. Mass Lowell) on who counts as a woman.

The attempt to exclude trans women from the ranks of women reinforces the dangerous idea that there is a right way to be female.
