The Department of Environmental Sciences and Bhoomitrasena Club, University of Kerala, observed World Environment Day 2025 on June 5th with the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution Globally." A team of 10 Member delegates from Bank of Baroda Trivandrum Regional office and Kazhakuttom Branch office graced the occasion reflected a shared commitment across sectors to support environmental initiatives. Dr. Sabu Joseph, Prof. and Head, Dept of Environmental Sciences., presided the function.
The talks presented were by our own Postgraduate students (MSc Environmental Sciences and MSc Climate Change and Disaster Management) on relevant topics based on the theme. By giving our students this platform, we recognize and celebrate their insights, fresh perspectives, and innovative ideas which is crucial in shaping a sustainable future. The talks were followed by Planting of fruit tree saplings and medicinal plants.
Poster competition was held over the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution: Solutions for a Sustainable Future” which provided an opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and insight. Prizes were distributed for best posters.

Dept of Environmental Sciences and Bhoomitrasena Club, University of Kerala observed World Water Day 2025, on 24th March with the theme “Glacier Preservation”, emphasizing the urgent need to protect the world's glaciers as they play a crucial role in maintaining the planet's water cycle.

Mrs. Mini Chandran, Director, CGWB was the Guest of Honour and delivered the keynote address, detailing the topic “Impact of climate change on water resources”. Dr. Sukanya, Postdoc of the Department of Environmental Science also delivered a lecture on "Cutting edge AI in water resources management". Faculties, Research scholars, Post Doctoral Fellows and PG students from Dept. of Environmental Sciences and Geology participated the event.

The Bhoomitrasena Club of the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Kerala, successfully organized a one-day symposium on February 4, 2025, in observance of World Wetlands Day. The event, conducted in a hybrid mode, brought together distinguished experts and scholars to discuss critical issues related to wetland conservation and management.

Shri. Sunil Pamidi, Director, DOECC, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and delivered an insightful inaugural address emphasizing the importance of wetlands in maintaining ecological balance and supporting biodiversity. He highlighted the urgent need for conservation initiatives and sustainable management practices to protect these vital ecosystems.

Dr. Sabu Joseph, Prof. and Head, Dept of Environmental Sciences., presided the function.
The symposium featured a series of scholarly discussions by eminent experts in the field. Dr. Srikumar Chadopadya (Retired Scientist, NCESS), Dr. K. Soman(Retired Scientist, NCESS),, Dr. Eric Volanski (Prof. James Cook University, Australia), and Dr. Tim Jennerjen (ZMT,Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research,Germany). shared their expertise on various aspects of wetland ecosystems, including their ecological significance, threats, and conservation strategies.

A major highlight of the event was the release of the book titled Ecohydrology of Kerala, authored by Prof Dr.Salom Gnana Tanga Vincent, et al. The book, Ecohydrology of Kerala: River Catchments and Coastal Backwaters draws on two decades of research to provide suggestions for sustainable management strategies addressing challenges arising from human impacts on surface water systems. Analysing the current water system in Kerala alongside global trends like climate change aims to enhance the region’s database and facilitate the transition to a knowledge society as part of the Navya Kerala (New Kerala) initiatives, was highly appreciated by attendees for its comprehensive research and contribution to wetland ecosystem studies.

Greetings from Dept. of Environmental Sciences, University of Kerala!!

The Dept. of Environmental Sciences, University of Kerala is organizing a Three Days National Workshop on 'Occupational Health and Environmental Safety (NWOHS-2024)' scheduled from May 15th to 17th, 2024.

Er. Sreekala S, Chairperson of the Kerala State Pollution Control Board will inaugurate the workshop, while distinguished academician Prof. (Dr) Wilkister Nyaora Moturi (Kenya) will deliver the keynote address.

With over 10 esteemed invited speakers hailing from both national and international domains, the event promises insightful discussions and presentations. Additionally, Research Scholars will be presenting their papers, fostering open dialogue and knowledge exchange.

The workshop includes a special ceremony on the final day, where the alumni will pay tribute to retiring faculty members, Prof. (Dr) Jaya D.S and Dr. Sherly Williams, for their significant contributions to academia.

"Heights -KU Researchers' Fest 2023" is being organized from 19 to 22 June in the Kariavattom Campus of the University of Kerala. The Fest will showcase the University's research output, focusing on the social relevance of research on contemporary themes and issues. The Fest will include interactions with eminent personalities from diverse knowledge domains, Hight end Research Equipment Demonstration, a Congregation of Industrialists and RD Heads, Exhibitions, Book fests, Competitions, and Cultural events.
