🧠 DID YOU KNOW...?..the computer that helped humans reach the Moon had less memory than a modern calculator?
The Apollo astronauts travelled nearly 400,000 kilometers to the Moon.
Their onboard computer had just 72 KB of read-only memory and 4 KB of RAM.
By today's standards, that's astonishingly small.
📖 The story
The Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) was developed at MIT during the 1960s.
Because every gram launched into space mattered, engineers had to build a computer that was compact, reliable and remarkably efficient.
During the Apollo 11 landing, the AGC became overloaded with unexpected data from the rendezvous radar.
Instead of crashing, it displayed the famous 1201 and 1202 alarms, automatically discarding less important tasks while continuing to perform the calculations needed for landing.
That clever software design helped Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin land safely on the Moon.
It's still considered one of the greatest examples of real-time computer engineering.
