One voice on stage knows better than almost anyone how words can move people: Terry Szuplat for eight years helped write the speeches of a US president, shaping messages that reached the world at some of its most defining moments.
Sharing the same stage is Dorothy Estrada-Tanck, an alumna who has championed equality on the world’s leading international platform, having chaired the UN Working Group on Discrimination against Women and Girls.

🎓 A new academic year begins at the EUI!

👋 We welcomed our newest researchers, master's students and fellows at our traditional Welcome Reception in Fiesole, organised together with the City Council of Fiesole.

This year, around 225 new members are joining the EUI’s doctoral, master's and fellowship programmes, representing 61 nationalities. Around 60 visiting fellows and 35 visiting students are also arriving in September 🌎

From guided tours of Fiesole’s archaeological area to institutional welcome speeches, music and a toast to the year ahead, the evening was a chance to meet, connect and celebrate the beginning of a new chapter 🎤

💬 As Ella Burkett, 2nd year student of the Master in Transnational Governance put it: “Take this opportunity as what it is: a special fragment of time to read, think, and challenge the way that the world works.”

"The EUI has really put me on a trajectory of starting in Europe but going long ways to other continents."

For EUI alumna Diana Natermann, her PhD journey in History opened doors far beyond the EUI, taking her research across Europe and sub-Saharan Africa and into her current role as Assistant Professor of European Political History at Maastricht University.

Economic sanctions have become a defining tool of US foreign policy, from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to tensions with Iran. Their reach extends far beyond target states, shaping the behaviour of foreign governments, companies, and financial institutions. But how did the US come to wield this kind of extraterritorial economic power?

🏦 In this interview, Max Weber Programme Fellow Flavia Canestrini explores the US sanctions in globalising markets. Through the case analysis of the 1981-1982 Siberian gas pipeline dispute, she illustrates not only how US extraterritorial sanctions function, but also how they adapted to the changing conditions of the global economy between the end of the 1970s and the 1980s.

☀️ Florentine heat outside, PhD-level economics inside 📈

The EUI Department of Economics welcomed 18 participants to the third edition of its summer school ‘The Core’, an intensive week of study designed to prepare participants for the rigorous training of a PhD in Economics.

📚 Across five days, an international group of students tackled four core areas - Mathematical Economics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Statistics & Econometrics - through lectures, exercises, assignments, and an introduction to computational tools.

💬 Lei Wu, EUI PhD researcher and instructor in Statistics & Econometrics: “What I found particularly rewarding about teaching at this year’s summer school was the opportunity to work with a highly motivated and diverse group of participants.”

‘The Core’ is funded by the EUI Widening Europe Programme, supporting access to high-quality research training and contributing to a more connected European academic community.

💬 For Giullia-Elena Neagu from Romania, the summer school offered both academic preparation and an opportunity to engage with an international group of peers: “The classes were well-structured, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills while allowing us to learn from the lecturers’ expertise. The diversity of the participants also enriched the programme, fostering meaningful academic dialogue and the exchange of different perspectives.”

How do EU member states fund and roll out the technology to clean up Europe’s fossil fuel industry?

🌍 In a piece for , Marzia Sesini and Adrien Nicolle from the EUI’s Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, together with with Burçin Ünel from New York University, explore what constitutes good carbon capture policymaking.

📝 In their view, carbon capture and storage (CCS) is not only a financial challenge but also a policy design challenge. A good CCS policy requires governments to determine how costs, risks, and responsibilities should be shared across the value chain as the technology develops.

🗣️ "Ultimately, achieving Europe’s CCS goals depends not just on the amount of public funding alone, but also on how governments allocate risks and responsibilities across the value chain, while remaining consistent with climate objectives."

🌍 In a new piece, Policy Leader Fellow Teopolina Namandje highlights a critical weakness in EU-Africa health partnerships — namely, the difficulty of transferring tacit expertise — and explores strategies for strengthening pharmaceutical manufacturing in Africa.

🗣️ "With Africa’s pharmaceutical market projected to reach $50 billion by 2030, the opportunities are significant. Manufacturing medical products on the continent can strengthen supply chains, reduce dependency, create jobs, boost healthcare provision, and support broader industrial development. 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲, 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐫? 🇮🇹

As Italy considers changes to its citizenship law, Maarten Vink, EUI Chair in Citizenship Studies and Co-Director, compares the country’s rules with those of 31 other European states.

Eleven of the 32 states examined grant citizenship at birth to some children of immigrant parents, while Italy does not, except where a child would otherwise be stateless.

Vink also challenges the idea that citizenship should come only after successful integration. Research suggests that access to citizenship can itself act as a catalyst for integration, including through better educational outcomes. 🇪🇺
