Forty years’ experience in focusing exclusively on doctoral programmes, post-doctoral study and research has made the EUI a global leader in high-quality postgraduate education. We provide a culturally diverse academic community, where you study alongside more than 900 scholars from over 60 countries. The EUI offers well-structured doctoral programmes that enable original research in Economics, History and Civilization, Law, and Political and Social Sciences, plus a masters degree (LL.M) in Law. programmes are fully-funded, with approximately 150 scholarships provided annually by EUI Member States and Associated Member States. is about more than writing a dissertation. Our research activities and academic skills training includes seminars and conferences within all EUI departments, the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and the Max Weber Programme for Postdoctoral Studies. In addition, our academic community has grown to include world-leading experts, visiting to present and discuss their work, and post-doctoral scholars, who further strengthen our interdisciplinary environment. Researchers benefit through this interaction, learning from and collaborating with these many distinguished visitors. Our dynamic multi-lingual environment means our researchers work predominantly in English, while enjoying our view on the beautiful city of Florence, an unparalleled cultural and artistic centre. Our alumni form an international professional network and enjoy excellence career prospects. ❓Is France in 2026, Greece in 2009?

🏦France is facing mounting fiscal pressure, with public debt nearing 116% of GDP, persistent budget deficits, and borrowing costs at their highest levels in over two decades. High public spending, sluggish productivity, and an ageing population are making its social model increasingly difficult to sustain. Meanwhile, political fragmentation and social unrest are undermining the government's ability to deliver the fiscal reforms needed to restore market confidence.

📝In the latest article, Professor George Papaconstantinou from the EUI's Florence School of Transnational Governance explores the extent to which the French socio-economic crisis compares to the Greek 2009 crisis.

For Hanna Schebesta, EUI alumna, President of the EUI Alumni Association and Associate Professor at Wageningen University, the EUI was instrumental in shaping her career in EU law.

Now Associate Professor at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, Hanna reflects on her PhD journey, the value of studying law across different national jurisdictions to the professional networks built at the EUI.

Her advice to current and future researchers: make the most of the EUI’s opportunities for intellectual growth, while finding a balance between academic life and everything beyond it.

🤝 We strenghen our ties with Univerzita Karlova 🇨🇿

📝 On 22 October, the EUI and Charles University took an important step towards deepening their partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding at the historic Carolinum in Prague.

💬 “Our institutions have long been connected through numerous academic collaborations, research projects and personal ties between scholars. Today, we are giving these relationships a durable institutional framework and creating new opportunities for future cooperation,” said Charles University Rector Professor Jiří Zima in his welcome remarks.

The event continued with remarks by Director of the EUI Development and External Relations Service Sébastien Huber and Italian Ambassador Alessandro Gaudiano, who underlined the importance of bringing research and education together to address Europe’s shared challenges.

💬 Huber also highlighted the EUI’s mission to contribute knowledge and expertise to European society: “We are a university with a mission, every university has this mission towards society, and I think that's what brings us here today and in the future in our work together.”

The Forum featured a keynote lecture on European Union politics by EUI Professor Simon Hix, alongside contributions Czech EUI alumni. Professor Veronika Čapská, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at Charles University, reflected on the lasting value of her experience at the Institute: “I have benefited immensely from the academic community at the EUI, and at the same time, I was always keen and very ready to give back.”

During the event, Professor Jelena Dzankic also highlighted the opportunties provided by the EUI Widening Europe Programme , which supports researchers and academic communities through fellowships, mobility opportunities, training and collaborative activities across Europe.

🎓 The collaboration continued on 23 October with a PhD Workshop in Comparative Politics, jointly organised by the Widening Europe Programme, Charles University and the Czech Political Science Association. Doctoral researchers presented their work, received feedback from senior academics and took part in training on publishing in peer-reviewed journals led by Professor Filip Kostelka whose efforts were key in strengthen ties between the two institutions.
