Studying, learning, experimenting without limits or boundaries. Established in Florence in 1985 by Giò Carbone, Le Arti Orafe (in English: “The Art of Jewellery”) was the first Italian school devoted to contemporary jewellery, conceived along original lines that combine technical training, conte

mporary design, artistic research. Our completely innovatory teaching methods is continuosly updated and in perpetual evolution, has left behind the old educational stereotypes, and has invented, tested and refined a creative, personalised way of learning, without losing sight of the acquisition of the techniques and concepts. LAO has always stood out because of its activities in promoting jewellery culture in the widest and most complete sense of the expression, and for many years organizes exhibitions, conferences, meetings related with contemporary research jewellery. Since 2005 the school organizes “PREZIOSA”, the international exhibition devoted to Contemporary Jewellery, along with the contest/exhibition PREZIOSA YOUNG.

PROJECT NOTES /04 — BINOMIO

In Binomio, Camilla Radaelli explores the relationship between elements that can accord or oppose one another: rigour and plasticity, symmetry and irregularity, contrast and affinity.

The project develops through a sequence of studies in which stones, colour, rhythm and ornament become part of an evolving formal language. Different possibilities are tested before converging in Collier onde.

Here, the relationship between the two languages becomes active. Coloured enamelled waves distort the pavé structure; the stones respond to colour, while red elements emerge through contrast. In other studies, the relationship is reversed: the ordered structure of the pavé determines the fluid movement of the overlapping enamelled forms.

Rather than simply placing opposites side by side, Binomio investigates what happens when they begin to influence one another.

COLLECTION NOTES /02

Starting from Giulio Paolini’s Ebla (1976–77), Bijan’s research focuses on matter, surface and texture, and on the dialogue between art and nature.

What first caught his attention was the work’s material quality: a surface that suggests the intrinsic chaos of nature and its continuous transformation. Ok

From this observation, the research moves through traces, stratifications and organic structures, exploring their potential within contemporary jewellery design.

The process develops through a concept map, material references, sketches and visual simulations — not as steps towards a predetermined object, but as tools for testing possible directions.

Collection Notes is conceived as an exercise in observation and interpretation. Sketches and simulations are part of an exploratory process, used to test how an artwork can open new directions through materials, surfaces and forms.

A colour is never just a colour.

In Rosso. Storia di un colore, Michel Pastoureau traces the shifting meanings of red across history, language, symbols and social conventions.

Reading it raises a question that moves beyond colour itself: how much of what we see is shaped by what we have learned to recognise?

For jewellery and design, this changes the perspective. Colour is not simply something added at the end of a process. It can carry memory, material associations and cultural meaning — and become part of the thinking that gives form to an object.

Before colour is applied, it is interpreted.

Reading Notes is a space for books that open new directions for thinking about design.

PROJECT NOTES /04 — Irene Rosati

Contrasti begins with the idea that seemingly opposing qualities do not necessarily cancel each other out. They can coexist, interact and become part of the same identity.

Irene Rosati developed this idea through a process of transformation, looking at contrasts between rigidity and fluidity, geometry and movement, light and dark.

References from fashion and visual research gradually became a vocabulary of forms. Through drawing and making, these relationships were tested and translated into jewellery.

Rather than resolving contrast, the project allows different elements to remain visible within the same object.

Contrast becomes a way of constructing identity through form.
