🌏 The Earth Surface Processes & Society research team participated in the JpGU–AGU Joint Meeting 2026 in Makuhari, Chiba, Japan.

Together with international colleagues, Wendi Wang and Eugenio Straffelini co-organized the session “Soil and Water Monitoring through Innovative Sensing Technologies under Climate Change”, dedicated to innovative approaches for monitoring soil–water dynamics in a changing climate.

During the session, our team presented research on remote sensing, multi-platform topography, and sustainable water management. Wendi Wang also shared results from the PNRR-funded A.Q.U.A. project (Approcci per la Quantificazione e l’Uso sostenibile dell’Acqua nel Sistema Prosecco), supported by Regione Veneto. The project focuses on addressing water scarcity and extreme rainfall through sustainable irrigation practices, efficient water storage solutions, and climate adaptation strategies for viticulture in the Prosecco area.

A valuable opportunity to strengthen international collaborations and exchange knowledge on how sensing technologies can support resilient soil and water management.

New Publication!

We are very pleased to present a perspective article titled "Nature-based solutions for soil and water conservation in an era of climate extremes: Limitations and future scenarios", published in International Soil and Water Conservation Research (IF 7.3).

Together with co-authors from around the world, the article discusses the efficacy of nature-based solutions in the context of future climate extremes.

Prof. Paolo Tarolli, head of our research group, participated in the EU CAP Network Conference “Water Resilience in Agriculture: Innovation in Practice” in Hamburg, Germany🇩🇪

During the event, he presented the “Soilution System”project, focused on innovative solutions for soil erosion risk mitigation and sustainable vineyard management in hilly and mountain landscapes 🍇🏔️.

📚🏢🧑🏻‍🌾🇪🇺The conference brought together researchers, institutions, farmers, companies, and stakeholders from across Europe to discuss sustainable water management, climate resilience, and innovation in agriculture.

The event also provided valuable opportunities for networking, exchanging ideas, participating in working groups, and exploring future collaborations🤝.

In addition, the “PHITO Horizon Europe” project was showcased during the innovation market activities by Prof. Mihai Ciprian Margarint from Romania🇷🇴

New Publication!

We present a new publication in the journal Remote Sensing Applications: Society and Environment (IF 4.5). Titled "A remote sensing framework for mapping agricultural water priority areas and hot spots in northeast Italy", this work aims to help improve agricultural water resource management in Italian water authorities.

We give many thanks to our partners at the Consorzio di Bonifica Adige Po for their cooperation.

What happens when the demand for sand becomes a driver of river instability?

We were pleased to host Prof. Edward Park from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, for a seminar on “From the Mekong Delta to the World: Sand Mining, River Instability, and Pathways to Sustainable Management.”

Prof. Park guided us through the case of the Mekong Delta, showing how sand and gravel extraction can affect sediment budgets, riverbed morphology, bank stability, salinity intrusion, and delta resilience.

It was an insightful discussion on how human pressures are reshaping river systems, and on why sustainable management needs to bring together science, monitoring, transparency, and governance.

🌍 In recent weeks, our research group has been actively engaged in international research activities in Argentina, led by Prof. Paolo Tarolli and Dr. Eugenio Strafellini.

Among these, a particularly relevant initiative took place in Patagonia, where research activities focused on testing and developing resilient viticulture approaches. This work was carried out in the context of the Italian Research Day in the World, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in addressing global environmental challenges.

🔬 In addition, the team contributed to the International Workshop on Viticulture and Climate Change held at the Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias (UNCUYO). The workshop brought together experts from the Università degli Studi di Padova and Universidad Nacional de Cuyo to discuss the impacts of climate change on viticulture, exploring innovative tools such as remote sensing, satellite imagery, and sustainable management strategies.

🌱 These experiences emphasize the value of conducting research abroad, fostering knowledge exchange and strengthening scientific cooperation to tackle shared challenges like climate change.

We are pleased to share that the webinar “KeAi Talk: ISWCR Series IV (IT’s ISWCR Vibe) – Nature-based Solutions and Modelling Innovations for Sustainable Soil and Water Management under Climate Extremes” was successfully held, with excellent online participation from an international audience 🌍

The event was co-organized by the International Soil and Water Conservation Research (ISWCR) journal together with our Research Team at the University of Padova, coordinated by Wendi Wang and co-hosted by Eugenio Straffelini.

Among the speakers was Paolo Tarolli from our team, together with researchers from the University of Florence and Roma Tre University.

It was a valuable opportunity to discuss recent advances in sediment dynamics modelling, nature-based solutions, and sustainable soil and water management under climate extremes.

A sincere thank you to all speakers, hosts, and participants for the strong engagement and the stimulating discussion throughout the event 🤝

We are glad to share that our new paper has been published in the *International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation*.

“Multi-decadal remote sensing observations evaluating the spatiotemporal patterns of seawater intrusion impact on a crop-rotation system”

In this study, we explored the impact of seawater intrusion on agriculture in the Po River Delta, one of the most vulnerable coastal areas in the Mediterranean.

By combining 25 years of Landsat data with a machine learning approach, we analyzed how salinity-related stress has affected major summer crops over time, including soybean, rice, maize, and alfalfa.

Some of the main results:
📌 35,000–41,000 hectares of cropland exceeded critical stress thresholds
📌 June emerged as the most vulnerable month
📌 recurrent hotspots were mainly concentrated in coastal areas
📌 conditions worsened near the coastline in 2013–2024 compared with 2000–2012

We hope this work can contribute to a better understanding of salinity stress in coastal agricultural systems and support future research on adaptation and resilience under climate change.

Our research group continues to work on soil salinization and its impacts on agriculture (even on the other side of the world🌍) addressing one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.

📍 Aral Sea (Uzbekistan 🇺🇿)

Last week, Prof. Paolo Tarolli and Dr. Aurora Ghirardelli directly observed extreme salinization processes in the Aral Sea region. A conversation with a local shepherd revealed how these changes are already affecting livestock and local livelihoods.

🔬 Our ongoing research in the Po Delta and along the Lazio coastal areas is helping to develop tools and approaches to better understand and tackle salinization, with strong potential for application in other vulnerable regions such as Central Asia.

These experiences are also fostering new ideas and opportunities for international collaboration on soil salinity and its growing impact on agriculture and food security.
