Instead of adding air conditioning, Medellín added nature.

Since 2016 the city has turned 30 roads and waterways into Green Corridors: a 20 km network of shaded routes with cycle lanes and footpaths. By 2021 that meant about 880,000 trees and 2.5 million smaller plants of 72 species, covering more than 70 hectares.

🌡️ City Hall reports that the urban heat island effect dropped by 2°C in the first three years. The sources I found do not explain how this was measured, so I treat it as a city figure.

💰 The initial investment was $16.3 million, roughly $6 per resident for a city of about 2.5 million people.

👷 Around 150 gardeners maintain the corridors, many from disadvantaged neighbourhoods, which creates green jobs.

⚠️ Maintenance matters. Reports mention overgrowth and dirt when upkeep funding fell short, and traffic pollution and dumping in some inner city corridors.

Medellín won an Ashden cooling award in 2019. A plant covered street is cooler for people, cleaner for lungs and better for biodiversity at the same time.

What can you do?
🌳 Ask your municipality for shaded, planted streets
🌿 Plant a tree or hedge on your own land
🤝 Support projects that train local people as gardeners

🚀🏙️ SMDP26 — FROM DESIGN ACTIONS TO REAL-WORLD INSPIRATION!
How do successful urban projects turn sustainability ambitions into concrete design solutions? 🌱

Yesterday, our SMDP26 students submitted their Tutorial 4 outcomes, taking another important step in the Reinventing Lambrate journey!
🔎 Through the investigation of real-world case studies, students explored how selected IMM Design Ordering Principles (DOPs) and their interconnected Actions can generate integrated solutions for more sustainable, resilient and liveable urban environments.
💡 The challenge? Learning from existing projects, understanding the relationships between design Actions, and translating this knowledge into inspiration for their own urban transformation strategies.

🌍 From biodiversity commitments to delivery. starts today.

As gets underway in Yerevan today, attention is turning to a crucial question: are we making enough progress towards the global targets agreed under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework?

This year’s Global Review is the first test of the new system for tracking implementation, with the EU calling for faster action across all 23 global biodiversity targets.

The European Environment Agency is at COP17 to contribute European knowledge and evidence to that effort. Our work in Yerevan will highlight how better biodiversity knowledge and monitoring, more sustainable consumption and effective implementation can help translate global commitments into measurable progress.

Because protecting and restoring nature is also about strengthening our economies, health and climate resilience.

🌿 What if urban green spaces did more than just look beautiful?

Action 5.2 of IMM promotes a new generation of connected green networks where nature, recreation, health, and social life become part of the same system. Playgrounds, active play areas, informal sports spaces, recreation lawns, water features, and gathering places are not isolated amenities—they are interconnected components of a living urban infrastructure.

By linking people, water, biodiversity, and public life through continuous green corridors, cities can create healthier communities, encourage active lifestyles, improve climate resilience, and strengthen social interaction for all generations.

A successful park is not simply a destination. It is a connected network of experiences, activities, and ecosystem services that transforms everyday urban life.

🌍 Designing greener cities means designing places where nature and people thrive together.
