From excessive groundwater extraction to the challenges of the energy transition, the progressive lowering of the ground represents a concrete threat to coastlines, infrastructure, and communities: for this reason, the study co-authored by the ICEA Dipartimento Ingegneria Civile Edile e Ambientale Università di Padova highlights the importance of combining satellite data from the European Ground Motion Service, part of Copernicus EU program, with a deep geological understanding of the subsurface.
Researchers also draw attention to future challenges linked to the energy transition, such as geothermal energy exploitation and underground gas storage which, without management that fully respects environmental conditions, can influence ground movement.
The study was carried out alongside a european research team and published in the scientific journal Nature Sustainability.
