🔬 **Acute myeloid leukemia: what happens to cancer cells that survive chemotherapy?**
A new study coordinated by **Raffaella Di Micco**, Associate Professor of Pathology at the IUSS School for Advanced Studies in Pavia and Group Leader at the San Raffaele Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy (SR-Tiget), shows that in some samples of **acute myeloid leukemia (AML)**, chemotherapy-induced senescence can make leukemia cells **more recognizable to the immune system**.
When leukemia cells enter senescence after chemotherapy, they can increase the expression of HLA molecules on their surface, helping T cells recognize and respond to them.
The researchers also identified an **epigenetic mechanism** that could help explain why this response occurs in some samples but not in others, opening new avenues for investigating senescence as a potential biomarker and exploring future combination treatment strategies.
The study, also supported by Fondazione AIRC, was published in *Nature Communications*.
