🇮🇹 Rome wasn’t built in a day. And it’s still being built.

On Day 3, our students stepped beyond the classroom and into the city itself, exploring Rome through its streets, landmarks, markets, and layers of history, led as instructor by Tom Rankin, our director.

Moving through the city, they experienced Rome not simply as a place to study, but as a living classroom—where the past is always present, and the city continues to evolve.

The Fall 2026 program has officially begun! 🎓 Students arrived in Rome today and kicked off their first day with orientation at Borromini Institute—meeting the team, settling into their new home, learning about life in Rome, and sharing their first aperitivo together.

Here’s to a semester of learning, exploring, and making memories together. 💙🧡

We were thrilled to hear from one of our great alumni, Amber Cloud, who is in town this summer. Of course we insisted she come by to visit. Amber was part of our Summer 2025 cohort and tells us how the experience changed her life.

Our course leader Jessica Wittingslow Mancini invited no-waste expert Lucia Cuffaro to lead a workshop with a twist: traditional preserving techniques, applied to skincare.

Here in Rome, as part of our 2026 Summer Food Study program, students discovered that preserving isn‘t just for vegetables. Using the same philosophy Italian grandmothers apply to food — nothing wasted, everything transformed — they made their own face cream from plant oils, floral water, and beeswax. They distilled lavender with a moka pot. They crafted deodorant from just three ingredients. All edible. All natural. All made by their own hands.

At Borromini Institute, we believe Italian tradition has something urgent to teach the world: less consuming, more creating. Less waste, more care. Your kitchen can feed your skin, not just your stomach.

The other week, our students ventured north of Rome for the weekend to the scenic region of Tuscia. Alongside Prof. Jessie Mancini and Tuscia Lab's Alessandro De Filippo, they explored Tuscia's rich gastronomic culture through a narrated lunch, guided farm visits, and a group dinner complete with regional delicacies and local folk music! Of course, they couldn't visit Tuscia without exploring Lake Bolsena and taking a dip in the crystal waters.

Grazie mille to Prof. Mancini and Tuscia Lab for sharing one of Lazio's hidden gems with our students!

At TBI we are fully committed to talking about the elephant in the room: climate. Everything we do is impacted by it and much of what we do impacts it, with potentially disastrous results. Yet as our students learn in Italy, we can live well and have a positive impact on our communities and our planet, no sacrifice required.
