INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
11-12 June
at the Swedish Institute in Rome
Via Omero 14, Rome
The conference Bengt E. Thomasson (1926–2025): A Life for Ancient Rome and Modern Sweden commemorates the life and work of Bengt E. Thomasson, Director of the Swedish Institute of Classical Studies in Rome 1961–64, whose scholarship contributed significantly to the study of Roman epigraphy and provincial administration. Bringing together scholars from across Europe, the conference focuses on two central areas of his research: the Carmina Epigraphica Romana and the Laterculi Praesidum. The programme opens with an afternoon devoted to Thomasson’s scholarly legacy, Swedish epigraphic studies, and his work on the Carmina Epigraphica Romana, while the following morning examines Roman governors, provincial administration, and military command structures across the Empire. Together, the papers highlight Thomasson’s lasting importance for both Swedish and international Roman studies.
