✨ A new ERC Starting Grant at SISSA: €1.2 million for Gabriel Cuomo

👏 Gabriel Cuomo has been awarded a prestigious Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for his project "Extended Probes in Quantum Field Theory: from Impurities to Confining Strings".

The grant will support five years of research in Theoretical Physics, focusing on extended objects in quantum systems and on the physics of confinement—the phenomenon that prevents certain fundamental particles, such as quarks, from being observed in isolation.

🏆 With this award, SISSA reaches a total of 35 ERC grants.

Originally from Sicily, Gabriel has an international research background spanning École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Stony Brook University, Princeton University and New York University. He joined SISSA in 2025.

🌟 Wishing Gabriel great success in this exciting new chapter of his career!

🧠 Healthy ageing can be trained

Two new studies from Professor Raffaella Rumiati's lab at SISSA show that cognitive reserve built over a lifetime — through education, stimulating work, and an active lifestyle — helps preserve mental abilities after 65.

But there's more to it: emotions matter too. How well we recognize and interpret them can shape how efficiently our cognitive processes work as we age.

First authors Elisabetta Pisanu and Stefania Lucia looked at, respectively, the link between cognitive reserve and language performance, and the role of cognitive reserve and emotional intelligence in working memory.

Both studies are part of Age-It, a major Italian research programme on population ageing.

🪢 A new twist in a tangled story

A new study published in Nature Communications introduces an innovative simulation method to explore dense polymer systems at an unprecedented scale.

By developing a Self-Assembly Monte Carlo (SAMC) approach, SISSA researchers overcome long-standing computational limits, making it possible to generate extremely large configurations and gain new insights into how polymer chains behave when tightly packed.

The study shows that entanglements are not diffuse, but instead form localised knots and links, separated by less entangled regions—offering a new perspective on complex materials and biological systems.

This advance opens new directions for research in materials science, soft matter and beyond.

Today marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of Paolo Budinich, physicist, founder and first director of SISSA.

His contribution was instrumental in establishing Trieste as an international centre for scientific research and, in 1978, in founding SISSA.

Almost fifty years on, his vision of science as outward-looking — open, international and focused on the younger generation — continues to guide our School.

✨ A new Simons Collaboration at SISSA

Gabriel Cuomo, tenure-track researcher in the TPP group at SISSA, is among the Principal Investigators of the new Simons Collaboration on the Physical Sciences: The Virtue of Defects, supported by the Simons Foundation.

The initiative brings together 15 researchers from leading international institutions to study non-local phenomena in physics, from quantum entanglement to extended objects such as strings and branes, which cannot be fully described by measurements at a single point in space and time.

Through a programme of joint research, workshops, exchanges and postdoctoral positions, the collaboration will connect expertise across condensed matter, high-energy and computational physics to explore new approaches to fundamental questions.

👏 Congratulations to Gabriel on this achievement!

SISSA mourns the passing of Daniele Amati, its long-standing Director and a leading figure in the world of theoretical physics

'We owe the SISSA we know today to him.' These were the words SISSA used to celebrate Amati's 90th birthday in 2021, and they resonate today with even greater intensity. Director from 1986 to 2001 and former head of the Theoretical Division at CERN, he was appointed by founder Paolo Budinich to carry the School forward. Under his leadership, SISSA established its Neuroscience area, pioneered open-access publishing through JHEP, and developed its work in the dialogue between research and society.

Born in Rome in 1931 into a Jewish family, he was forced to move to Argentina in 1939 to escape the racial laws, where his lifelong passion for physics was kindled. Throughout his career, he met many prominent figures from the worlds of physics, culture and international politics, from Richard Feynman to Italo Calvino and Fidel Castro. He would have turned 95 on 11 August.

His legacy lives on in the community he helped built.
