🏔️ Last week, a highly successful closing conference in Tolmezzo for the TORRENT project 🌐 www.ita-slo.eu/torrent with the HydroLab UNIUD team at Università degli Studi di Udine – DI4A Uniud, in partnership with Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, Regionalni razvojni center Koper and Univerza v Ljubljani / University of Ljubljana

The debate was rich of discussions on the geo-hydrological risk along mountain torrents — and the role of the torrent control structures. Exactly the kind of conversation this project was built for! 💧🌲

A big thank you to the Comunità di montagna della Carnia for hosting the event, and to all our project partners for the amazing work done together over these years. The results speak for themselves! 🙌

But this isn't goodbye — the collaboration goes on! 🤝

🏔️❄️ We're back on the Glacier for the 2026 season!
Last week we headed up on the ice to measure snow height and density, and to run a UAV-based LiDAR survey across the glacier surface.
A huge thanks to the Avalanche Office, Forest Services – Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Corpo Forestale Regionale for their great help out in the field! 🙌
Big thanks also to Protezione Civile della Regione Autonoma FVG for helping us plan and pull off the mission! 🙏

📢 Don't miss the Final Conference of the "TORRENT" project!

🗓 Thursday, May 28, 2026 at 10:00
📍 Sala Convegni della Comunità di Montagna della Carnia, Tolmezzo (Via Carnia Libera 1944, n. 15)

Join us for the closing event of the Interreg Italy–Slovenia project TORRENT, led by the HydroLab UNIUD team at Università degli Studi di Udine – DI4A Uniud, in partnership with Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, Regionalni razvojni center Koper and Univerza v Ljubljani / University of Ljubljana.

It will be a great opportunity to share the final results of the project on watershed monitoring and analysis, and to present the memorandum of future collaboration between partners.

😉There was great interest in the new QGIS plugin "HʏᴅʀᴏGᴇᴏᴍᴏʀᴘʜᴏʟᴏɢʏ Tᴏᴏʟs ꜰᴏʀ QGIS" presented last week in Paluzza (UD) to technical experts from the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and Slovenia. The plugin was developed thanks to contributions from the Interreg Italy–Slovenia project “TORRENT” (www.ita-slo.eu/torrent) 🇮🇹 🇸🇮 lead by HydroLab UNIUD, with Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, Regionalni razvojni center Koper and Univerza v Ljubljani / University of Ljubljana.

😎Check out the results of the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia project 🇮🇹 🇸🇮 𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐓 (https://www.ita-slo.eu/it/torrent) presented at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) Conference held in Vienna from May 4 to 8, 2026.
During the scientific session HS9.6 (Sediment Dynamics and Watershed Management under Environmental and Climate Change), organised by members of the TORRENT research group (Sara Cucchiaro - Università degli Studi di Udine, DI4A Uniud and Vesna Zupanc - Univerza v Ljubljani / University of Ljubljana), the results of field surveys were presented, utilizing remote sensing techniques in pilot basins and applying the Maintenance Priority Index (MPi) to improve the management of hydraulic and forestry infrastructure in Italy 🇮🇹 and Slovenia 🇸🇮 .

The TORRENT project is co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia Program.

➡️ We developed and tested a novel Potential Fragility Index (PFI) to support the monitoring and management of torrent control structures (check dams and bed sills) at the regional scale.
The index integrates intrinsic factors (e.g. structure age, height, construction material) and extrinsic factors (e.g. lithology and channel reach) to:
✔️ classify structures according to their potential fragility
✔️ identify critical hotspots within catchments
✔️ support early-stage screening and prioritisation of maintenance interventions
📊 The approach was applied to more than 3,500 structures across Friuli Venezia Giulia region and qualitatively validated through field surveys on 282 structures, showing good conceptual agreement with observed conditions.
🌍 This simple, scalable, and data-driven tool represents a practical solution to support watershed management, especially under increasing pressure from climate-driven changes.
