Artemis Quantum Project The project is motivated by the urgent need for novel quantum sources with unprecedented versatility, flexibility, and performance.

The project ARTEMIS, entitled “Molecular materials for on-chip integrated quantum light sources“, proposes fundamental research toward the development of integrable single and entangled photon sources based on metallorganic molecular compounds. This goal will be pursued by resorting to molecular materials, based on transition metal and/or lanthanide ions with organic moieties, characterized by tun

able linear downshifted emission as well as non-linear optical properties enabling on-demand single photons and entangled photon pairs/triplets generation. Such flexible and processable metallorganic materials will replace traditional quantum photon sources based on bulk inorganic crystals allowing for the direct integration of wavelength-tunable quantum sources on current devices. The molecular quantum sources will be combined with suitable designed plasmonic supernanostructured cavities to achieve the highest optical enhancement. The proposed progress will be gained through cutting-edge synthesis techniques and advanced characterization methods integrated with nano-photonics engineering strategies. The devices and methods developed in this project will lead to photon sources with competitive performance in terms of coherence, efficiency, scalability, and cost. This will lead to a fundamental breakthrough in the development of quantum technologies, paving the way to bring them out of the laboratory into the real world. The achievement of the high-risk/high-gain project goal requires an intensive research activity in different scientific/technological areas, achievable thanks to a multidisciplinary consortium, and the right balance among the competitiveness of the expected results, the degree of technological innovation, and future development. The outcomes and targets are expected to lead European research at the forefront of the second quantum revolution, thus contributing to Europe’s position as a global leader in the field.

We are excited to announce that a new paper from our project partners - Silvia Bonabello, Flavia Artizzu, Dimitrije Mara, Rodolpho Alessandro Nesta Silva, Luca Pilia and colleagues — has been published in Advanced Optical Materials! 🎉

In this work, the team presents the design of molecular lanthanide-based quantum light sources tailored for on-chip integration - a key step toward scalable quantum photonic technologies.

By engineering highly rigid molecular environments around lanthanide ions, the researchers achieved remarkably pure and stable optical emission with very narrow linewidths, even at room temperature. Notably, the europium complex demonstrates an exceptionally well-defined single optical transition of high interest for quantum applications. These materials also perform well when embedded in technologically relevant thin films, offering high excitation selectivity, low background fluorescence, and tunable optical properties.

This research highlights the strong potential of molecular lanthanide systems as practical, integrable quantum emitters for future photonic devices.

Congratulations to all authors on this excellent achievement! 👏

🔬✨ Shaping the Future of Quantum Light with ARTEMIS

ARTEMIS is driving cutting-edge research toward next-generation quantum light sources based on advanced metal–organic molecular materials. By combining transition metals, lanthanides, and tailored plasmonic nanostructures, we are developing integrable sources of single and entangled photons for on-chip quantum technologies.

💡 Our goal: versatile, scalable, and cost-effective quantum emitters that can be directly integrated into modern devices—bringing quantum technologies from the lab to real-world applications.

From innovative molecular design to nano-photonics engineering, this multidisciplinary effort is paving the way for the second quantum revolution in Europe and beyond.

🚀 Applications span sensing, metrology, telecommunications, and quantum information.

to our annual project meeting in beautiful Vigo, Spain 🇪🇸, held at the end of October 2025 and hosted by our colleagues at ().

The project has now reached its midpoint - with two more years to go ⏳. The ARTEMIS Quantum Project is an ambitious, high-risk, high-gain project combining multiple fields across physics and chemistry, and bringing together research groups from different institutes and countries.

PhD students and postdocs from each group presented their recent and ongoing work, sparking constructive discussions and helping ensure that everyone is aligned and moving forward together. It was truly motivating to see how this challenging idea is coming together through collaboration and shared effort 💡🤝.

Looking forward to the next phase!
