GODAI Symposium (五代シンポジウム) held in TANAKA Memorial Hall

For a while now, Mr. GODAI, one of the founders of OCU, has been described as an unscrupulous merchant in high school textbooks. Around 1880, he did a lot to help establish infrastructure in Osaka including starting the Osaka Commercial Training Institute, later to become OCU. His philosophy was altruism. He worked for the people and Osaka, never for money, status or glory. He was never like such a person described in the textbooks.
In this symposium, Mr. SUEOKA proved with historical documents that Mr. GODAI was not involved with the so-called 'disposal of government-owned property by the Development Commission' (開拓使官有物払下げ事件). Prof. HARAGUCHI, a very famous historian, kindly attended this meeting to give us valuable words from Kagoshima, the birthplace of Mr. GODAI.
Everyone was surprised by the video appearance of Dean FUJIOKA, impressing us all with a message. He is a very famous actor who played the role of Mr. GODAI in the NHK Dramas 「あさが来た」and「青天を衝け」.
We would never have such a fruitful and successful meeting without the passion and dedication of Prof. KODAMA, former President of the OCU Alumni, and Mr. YAGI, author of The New Biography of GODAI Tomoatsu (新・五代友厚伝). We are very pleased for such an outstanding meeting as an event cerebrating the Last ICHIDAI year. Thank you to everyone.

Happy New Year 2022!

The animal symbol this year accordingly to the zodiac is the tiger. There are 12 animals in the zodiac, so the same animal comes every 12 years. I was born in 1950 and the zodiac of that year was the tiger. Therefore, this is my 6th year to get the tiger. There are 3 months remaining of the period I am responsible for OCU as president when we will merge with OPU in April to form a new university, Osaka Metropolitan University (OMU). I appreciate all OCU staff for their outstanding effort and contribution to prepare for the upcoming opening of OMU. We should make every effort during the remaining three months to complete preparations for a successful start. Big dreams and hope wait for us after this hard work. Let’s go for it!

Meeting was held for the 90th Anniversary of the birth of KAIKO Takeshi

Mr. KAIKO, a graduate of OCU, is a very famous AKUTAGAWA Prize writer. Today, a meeting was organized by the OCU Alumni Association and OCU. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, about 80 people got together at the Memorial Hall that was recently completely renovated. The invited lecturer was Mr. TORII Shingo, Vice President of Suntory Group Holdings and grandchild of Mr. TORII Shinjiro, Founder of Suntory Corporation. Mr. TORII Shinjiro was a past student of Osaka Commerce School （大阪商業学校）which later became OCU. Mr. KAIKO was hired by Suntory after graduation and played a very active role as a copywriter. He made many wise remarks. My most favorite one is “人間らしくやりたいな。人間なんだからな”（I want to do as a human. Because I am a human.）We plan to have a section for Mr. TORII Shinjiro and KAIKO Takeshi in the OCU History Museum, which will be established at Building No.1 in a few years.

Holy illumination appears in the front yard of SUGIMOTO Campus

Every year, OCU staff and students in the Department of Human Life Science treat us to a beautiful holiday illumination. I was very impressed with this illumination in the front yard of Building No. 1. I felt a holy night with the view. The OCU spirit will last forever like this light in our hearts.

This night, OCU Students became a One-Day Producer for an expo

Since October 6th, I have been delivering my presidential curriculum called, “The Wisdom of Osaka 大阪の知”. I asked Visiting Professor Masaru ISHIKAWA, Chief Producer of Venue Management at Expo2025 Osaka,Kansai, to give several lessons on Planning Theory for OCU students. He kindly accepted and we had the final lesson the other night. A total of 6 groups with 4-5 students each made a presentation about their plan for the Virtual Expo Venue regarding SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). All the presentations were wonderful and exciting. The third group was superb in conducting themselves like a professional team. In three years, we will have the real Expo 2025 in Osaka. I hope some OCU students will play an active and important role there.

Wonderful! Harukas School Festival ハルカス学園祭

From Nov. 18 to 23, the Harukas School Festival was held at Abeno Harukas. A total of 24 universities attended. It was the first time Kintetsu Department store threw the festival. Several clubs from OCU and OPU enrolled to show off their unique activities and exhibitions. The diorama from the Model Railroad club was gorgeous. On just the first day, some artwork from the Art club “青桃会” sold out in the festival gallery. Fantastic! Some other work may sell out soon. But one of them may be left unsold I guess. The students might become desperate and half-jokingly put an extremely high price tag on it. It would be funny if someone bought it. Also, the OCU original SAKE “Tsuki-Oboro 月朧ろ” sold like hot cakes. I enjoyed the festival very much.

Possibly the best year to see Autumn Leaves

Autumn leaves have come. We are enjoying the beautiful red and yellow colors filling the SUGIMOTO Campus. The unique weather we are experiencing right now makes this the best year for autumn leaves.

Do you know how the leaves turn red? It’s about the daily temperature change. The leaves work through photosynthesis at daytime to produce glucose, which is transferred throughout the tree via its branches. The amount of glucose synthesized is more during higher daytime temperatures. As the temperature lowers at nighttime, a separation layer is formed in the branches and the synthesized glucose in the leaves is hard to pass through the branches. The glucose retained in the leaves causes a chemical reaction with proteins to produce red pigment called Anthocyanins. As you may be aware, the daily temperature change this Autumn has been exceptional. Don’t miss the beautiful autumn leaves this year!

Last Homecoming Day promising ZOKKON (続魂)

Today, we had the above-mentioned Memorial Day. OCU Alumni, members of the Education Supporters Association, students, and staff got together. Some people gathered at the newly renovated auditorium of Building No. 1 in our SUGIMOTO Campus and others attended online. We enjoyed a session on GODAI 五代友厚, founder of OCU, and a performance from OCU students of the orchestra and cheer team. I gave a talk entitled “Trajectory of concept for OMU Main Campus establishing in MORINOMIYA 森之宮キャンパスのキセキ”. Then we had a joyful free discussion.
This was the last homecoming day as Osaka City University (OCU) because OCU will merge with Osaka Prefecture University (OPU) to be reborn as Osaka Metropolitan University (OMU) in April, 2022. The OCU spirit will last forever with the yell “ZOKKON (続魂)!”.

OCU School Festival “Gin’nan-Sai 銀杏祭” has been held after the Corona crisis

After two years we at last had the Gin’nan-Sai. We did not hold it last year because of the COVID-19 crisis. OCU students were excited to have it although they had to observe several strict conditions to prevent spreading COVID-19. We enjoyed some interesting performances like comedy 落語, dance, music, a quiz show, and so on. I am very pleased to see a normal OCU CAMPUS gradually coming back. Momentum of COVID-19 seems to have weakened. I hope things will continue to settle down as it does.

Students from Club “Honaikude” will be on the Radio soon

I am playing a radio personality of the health program “元気出してゆこう！てっちゃんねる” on OBC(Osaka Broadcasting Corporation). The program has been brought to listeners every Monday evening for almost two years with Mrs. Amiru KAWASHIMA as an assistant. We invited above students to the studio for recording. Club “Honaikude” was established in January 2019 to promote activity for Expo2025 Osaka,Kansai. More than 30 students gather mainly from OCU and OPU including some students from other universities. They are promoting five different projects. We talked about the campus life and Expo2025. We enjoyed the talk very much. They are all very cheerful and active! I can’t lose. My last class started

Today I had a first lesson of President’s special subject course “Wisdom of OSAKA (大阪の知)”. I am very pleased to have the class on face-to-face, not online! The students there looked happy to be able to come together after long-term off under a state of emergency for pandemic of COVID-19. The theme of this course is Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025 and SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals)! This was the last one as my OCU program of lecture, because my term of President will be completed March 2022, and OCU will be reborn as Osaka Metropolitan University combined with Osaka Prefecture University (OMU) in April. We had the “last” OCU students this April and OCU “lasts” long in OMU and the heart of many people. ZOKKON (続魂)!

Smile comes back in OCU Campus!

The second-semester classes just began. We got together in real from today in OCU Campus after the 5th wave of COVID-19. We should, however, still be careful for the new variant coronavirus, which has much stronger infectivity. We do not want to stop the activities on the campus including classes and extracurricular activities. So, we decided to hold the strengthening week for prevention of COVID-19 for first two weeks from now on. If this will be completed successfully, we can relief the restriction of the activities step by step. A little bit more patient for getting enjoyable campus life back!
