Tohoku University was established in 1907 as Japan’s third national university, and is proud to be ranked among its leading universities. The five main campuses are in Sendai city, built around the ancient site of Sendai’s Aoba Castle. The university has 10 undergraduate schools, 17 graduate schools, 3 professional graduate schools and 6 research institutes. There are currently over seventeen thou

sand students enrolled at the university, with fifteen hundred of them international students from 83 countries around the world. Tohoku University has a history of innovation and continues to lead in traditional fields of research in materials science, physics and chemistry. As a comprehensive research university, most academic fields of study can be taken including the liberal arts, engineering, medicine, and life sciences. Tohoku University is committed to contributing to its local and global communities, and encourages academic-industry-government cooperation to help strengthen and develop new areas of research.

A tiny change to the arrangement of organic molecules in nanoparticle systems can result in a massive change to material properties. By synthesizing gold nanoparticles coated with two different types of organic molecules, a research team has uncovered new insights into this phenomenon.

Researchers discover that a small tweak to the distribution of organic molecules on nanoparticles triggers large-scale structural transformation.

Many secrets lie deep beneath the Earth’s surface. Researchers from Tohoku University uncovered one of them when they discovered a hidden natural lubricant inside an active fault. Their findings may explain why the Atotsugawa Fault System produces surprisingly few large earthquakes despite being located in a tectonically active region.

Why do some active faults produce surprisingly few large earthquakes despite being located in a tectonically active region? The answer to that mystery may lie in an unexpected material hidden deep underground.

The outbreak of widespread wildfires in Iwate Prefecture last month was a reminder that urgent action is needed in fire safety. Samuel Manzello from Tohoku University’s Institute of Fluid Science has long pioneered efforts to help researchers better predict how wildfires spread. In his most recent publication, he and his co-author discuss lessons for fire-prone regions based on an analysis of the fires that hit Ofunato City, Japan, last year.

New technical specifications will provide a framework for assessing and comparing fire spread models across these diverse fire types, providing much needed guidance as communities face increasing threats from wildfires.

Polymerized ionic liquids (PILs) are known for their strong ability to absorb carbon dioxide, as well as their stability as solid materials. However, during manufacturing, they often produce inorganic salts, making it difficult to accurately measure their true efficiency. Now, a joint research group successfully purified the PILs.

Conventional polymerized ionic liquids struggle to remove the inorganic salts, a byproduct of their manufacturing processes. However, the new material overcomes this longstanding bottleneck.
