Successful 20th Anniversary Reunion Brings JYPE Alumni Back to Tohoku University

On Monday, June 1, seven JYPE alumni reunited at Tohoku University for their 20th anniversary reunion, traveling from around the world to return to Sendai.
To celebrate the occasion, the Alumni and Outreach Office organized a special Career Talk event on Katahira Campus, where current students had the opportunity to hear the stories and experiences of their seniors.
After a brief introduction by International Exchange Officer Mr. Davide Bitti, Professor Yosh*taka Kasukabe, who oversees the JYPE program, welcomed the alumni back to Tohoku University and provided an update on the current status of the program. The seven alumni then delivered presentations about their experiences at Tohoku University, their career paths, and their current professional activities.
Following the final presentation, Professor Jonathan Stimmer from the Career Support Center introduced the services and support available to current students.
During the networking session that followed, students and alumni had the opportunity to get to know one another in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere while enjoying coffee, tea, and a selection of sweets.
It was a valuable opportunity for current students to see the potential impact of their experience at Tohoku University through the achievements and success stories of their “senpai”.
On Tuesday, June 2, six of the seven JYPE alumni participating in the reunion joined International Exchange Officer Davide Bitti for a field trip.
The first stop was Aobayama Campus, where the alumni had the chance to see firsthand how much the campus has changed over the years. The group then traveled to the summit area of Mount Zao to admire the spectacular Okama Crater Lake before relaxing at a nearby hot spring after lunch.
The reunion was a wonderful opportunity to revisit cherished memories while creating new ones.
The Alumni and Outreach Office was delighted to support this memorable reunion, including the Career Talk and field trip. We look forward to continuing to strengthen connections among alumni from all programs and around the world through similar initiatives in the future.
A heartfelt thank you to Nick Puts, Wang Hao, Stefan Lausberg, Nadège Audeon, Alla Korneva, Xavier Dommange, and Renaud Klein for making this reunion so memorable. We hope to welcome you back to Tohoku University again soon!

[Event for Exchange Students]

Let's learn about the traditional Japanese culture of the tea ceremony (sado)!

The Japanese tea ceremony, known as sadō, is a traditional cultural practice in which the host prepares and
serves tea to guests. Through this ritual, the host offers heartfelt hospitality (omotenashi), and the guests
receive and appreciate the tea in return.
Also called chanoyu, the tea ceremony is considered a comprehensive art form that brings together the tea
room and garden setting, the selection of utensils, the presentation of food, and refined etiquette.
Come enjoy freshly made matcha and traditional Japanese sweets while getting a hands-on introduction to
this iconic Japanese tradition.
The workshop will be led by an experienced instructor, Hanai Sōyū, who has over 50 years of practice and
will guide you with care.

We want to share with you a report from a recente event of the Alumni Association in Indonesia .tohoku !

On Sunday, May 10, 2026, the Tohoku University Alumni Association in Indonesia (IATU) hosted its annual Halal-Bihalal (Ied gathering). The event took place from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM at Sekolah Sinar Cendekia in South Tangerang City. Serving as a momentous post-Ramadan celebration, the gathering aimed to foster camaraderie and maintain strong networks among the alumni.

The event was warmly attended by approximately 30 alumni spanning various graduation years. The program commenced with a traditional silaturahmi (fostering of ties) and an introduction session, allowing both senior members and recent graduates to connect, share updates, and strengthen their bonds.

Following the introductions, the agenda proceeded with an insightful sharing session focused on "Current Domestic and Global Economic Conditions" by Muhammad Rifqi, PhD. (Tohoku University Graduate School of Economics and Management, 2011-2016), who is currently working in the Research Group of Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (Lembaga Penjamin Simpanan). This segment provided valuable perspectives on the ongoing economic landscape, sparking engaging and productive conversations among the attendees.

The gathering also served as a crucial platform for organizational matters. The members held a constructive discussion regarding the upcoming transition and election of the new IATU management. Furthermore, a significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to brainstorming and coordinating the preparations for the highly anticipated visit of the President of Tohoku University, Prof. Teiji Tominaga (Tominaga Sensei), to Indonesia.

The 2026 Halal-Bihalal concluded on a high note, filled with warmth and shared nostalgia. It is our greatest hope that this event will continuously strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and solidarity among all IATU members, paving the way for greater collaborative endeavors in the future.
