Research spotlight 2016|Stimulated Percussions

Evaluating multi-muscle body movements for EMS-based percussion performance

Existing EMS-based musical instrument studies have focused on movements of the human body for playing one specific instrument requiring whole-body movement, without evaluating or applying movements across different muscle groups. To address this, we propose Stimulated Percussions, a method that uses EMS to evaluate body movements associated with different muscles, sets individual rhythms to these movements, and investigates which instruments can be played using these rhythms. This design method expands the possibilities for untrained people to play musical instruments and demonstrates potential for supporting musical performance.

Computational design and underwater position control of 3D-fabricated Cartesian divers via PD control

Conventional Cartesian diver experiments have relied on simple objects such as condiment bottles with nuts, without enabling arbitrary shape fabrication or digital position control. To address this, we computationally integrate the design and operation of Cartesian divers using optimization calculations and a 3D printer, enabling fabrication of divers of arbitrary shape. A motor-driven syringe pump controlled by computer replaces manual pressure on the container, and combined with webcam-based position feedback and PD control, stabilizes the position of the Cartesian diver in water. This demonstrates digital control of real objects suspended mid-water without actuators such as fins, motors, or water-jets.

Research spotlight 2016|Holographic Whisper

Holographic Whisper: Three-dimensional spatial audio rendering via ultrasonic phased array focal point generation

Conventional superdirectional (sound-beam) loudspeakers deliver sound not only to the intended target but also to others along the same line of projection. To address this, we propose a method that employs an ultrasonic phased array as a holographic acoustic generator to focus ultrasound at arbitrary three-dimensional positions. The sound pressure at the ultrasonic focal points is sufficiently high to radiate audible sound based on the self-demodulation effect in air, causing the focal points to act as audible sound sources. This point sound source method enables more flexible and precise control of aerial audio distributions compared to conventional superdirectional loudspeakers, with sound sources that can be freely generated and vanished in air, enabling delivery of private messages or music to individuals.

Research spotlight 2016|Gushed Light Field

Gushed Light Field: Design method for a compact, lightweight, wind-resistant aerosol-based fog display

Conventional fog screens rely on fog generators that occupy large areas and are easily affected by air flow, with little attention given to weight, response time, or wind resistance. To address this, we propose Gushed Light Field, an aerosol-based fog display system using off-the-shelf sprays that introduces new tradeoffs between display time and payload. The minimum system weight is approximately 600 g, with a screen raise time of approximately 0.5 s, disappearance time of approximately 0.4 s, and a maximum wind speed of approximately 10 m/s for image projection. Prototypes were presented for wearable applications, aerial imaging with drones and radio-controlled cars, multi-viewpoint display, and environment-embedded displays, contributing to the exploration of new application areas for fog displays.

Human Coded Orchestra: Improvised group vocal harmony via computed spatial distribution of directional speakers

Previous work on improvised group musical performance — in both scientific and artistic contexts — has rarely gone beyond simple rhythm-based music and failed to achieve musical complexity. To address this, we present Human Coded Orchestra, an installation employing a number of directional speakers, each set at a different pitch, delivering different pitches to each participant according to their position, controlled by computer. No preparation is required on the part of singers, who simply imitate the pitch they hear. Experiments confirmed that participants could sing in harmony with minimal practice, with many reporting positive responses, demonstrating the possibility of practical application in the interactive performance area.

Research spotlight 2016|Optical Marionette

Subconscious control of pedestrian walking direction via visual illusion on a see-through HMD

Existing navigation systems have maintained the same paradigm for 30 years — presenting directional information for users to consciously recognize and follow — placing cognitive load on users when spatial mapping between the interface and self-localization fails. To address this, we present Optical Marionette, a novel manipulation method that subconsciously changes the walking direction of users via visual processing on a head mounted display. Using a stereo camera and HMD, the system provides real-time visual stimuli through image processing while users walk, controlling their walking direction without conscious awareness. Two image-processing methods were examined — moving stripe pattern and changing focal region — with the changing focal region method most effectively changing walking path by approximately 200 mm/m on average.

Coded Skeleton: A design method for shape-changing UI integrating actuators and sensors via mechanical metamaterial

Realizing shape-changing user interfaces requires unified integration of actuators and sensors and the ability to uniquely define deformation. To address this, we propose a design method for fabricating ""Coded Skeleton"", a novel shape-changing user interface that computationally integrates actuators and sensors using a mechanical metamaterial. Leveraging the fact that the Coded Skeleton is flexible in one deformation mode but stiff in others, the method realizes various curve deformations using simple expansion and contraction actuators. We describe the design method, structural analysis of the mechanical metamaterial, and the creation and control method of the Coded Skeleton, along with three proposed applications.

Cross-Field Haptics: A haptic texture display combining magnetic and electrostatic fields

Conventional research on haptic textures relies on a single physical quantity for rendering. Representing texture in the real world remains difficult, despite its importance in fabrication and manufacture across many industries. To address this, we propose a system that physically deforms and changes the physical force between the finger and the device by combining magnetic and electrostatic fields. The device integrates ferrofluid — a flexible liquid driven by the magnetic field — and electrovibration with adsorption force from the electrostatic field.

Cross Field Aerial Haptics: A method for aerial haptic rendering using combined laser and acoustic fields

Conventional aerial haptic research has rendered haptic images using a single physical quantity — either light or acoustic fields. To address this limitation, we present Cross Field Aerial Haptics, a method that combines femtosecond-laser light fields and ultrasonic acoustic fields simultaneously. While these fields have no direct interference, their combination provides multi-resolution haptic images and a synergistic effect on haptic perception. User studies with laser haptics and ultrasonic haptics separately, and their superposition, demonstrated that the acoustic field affects the tactile perception of laser haptics. We further explored AR/VR applications, contributing to the exploration of laser haptic displays and expanding the expression of aerial haptic displays based on other principles.

2016|Leaked Light Field from Everyday Material

This project proposes a new light-field display that overcomes the limitations of traditional smooth materials like glass by utilizing everyday materials such as wood, grained board, or mirror. By making 100μm pinholes in the surface of the material, rays from the backlight are transmitted to enable visual display. This system allows for the integration of displays into objects with a natural appearance, preserving the material's properties while providing viewing-angle-dependent imagery.
