JOOUST and the Agripreneurship Alliance Advance Youth-Led Agribusiness Innovation

Students from School of Agricultural and Food Sciences at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology continue to benefit from agripreneurship training offered through the partnership with Agripreneurship Alliance, a Swiss-based non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young entrepreneurs in agriculture.The fourth cohort of students had the unique opportunity to pilot the Alliance’s new agripreneurship curriculum, culminating in innovative business idea pitch presentations during a workshop held from 11th–14th May 2026 at JOOUST main campus in Bondo. The best student business ideas will receive seed capital support to help transform their concepts into viable agribusiness ventures.The workshop was graced by the CEO of the Agripreneurship Alliance, Steven Carr, who also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University. Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) successfully hosted the JOOUST Open Day 2026 under the theme: “Innovating for the Future: Advancing Science, Technology, and Sustainable Livelihoods.”The event brought together researchers, students, industry stakeholders, and visiting secondary schools in a vibrant exhibition of cutting-edge innovations, applied research, and emerging technologies aimed at transforming livelihoods and promoting sustainable development.The Open Day was officially opened by Prof. Elijah Ateka alongside Mr. Alfred Wangio, the Bondo Sub-County Director of Education, who reaffirmed the University’s commitment to strengthening research, innovation, and community outreach. Speaking during the event, Dr. Richard Magwanga, Head of Extension and Outreach, encouraged young people to embrace innovation as a pathway to wealth creation and societal transformation.Among the key highlights were:
✅ JOOUST InseFoods initiative showcasing cricket farming and insect-based food products
✅ Black Soldier Fly technology for organic waste management and sustainable animal feed production
✅ Sericulture and moriculture innovations featuring silk products, mulberry value addition, and cosmetics
✅ Aquaculture and aquaponics systems promoting efficient fish and plant production technologies
The event also provided an exciting innovation exposure platform for students from various secondary schools and TVET institutions, strengthening STEM engagement and academic partnerships.JOOUST continues to position itself as a regional hub for research, innovation, and technology development by translating scientific knowledge into practical solutions that address food security, environmental sustainability, and socioeconomic transformation.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) today hosted a delegation from the University of Embu for a benchmarking visit on the JOOUST Staff Retirement Benefits Scheme (SBRS).

The visit provided the delegation with insights into the operational framework, management structures, and best practices that have contributed to the successful implementation and sustainability of the JOOUST SBRS. Discussions focused on governance, financial management, member participation, accountability mechanisms, and strategies that have enhanced the Scheme's effectiveness in supporting staff welfare and economic empowerment.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emily A. Akuno, today led a JOOUST delegation to the high-level Leadership and Stakeholder Forum held at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi, under the theme “African Universities Driving Local Development: Visibility, Advocacy, Impact.”

The forum brought together university leaders, policymakers, ambassadors, development partners, and international organizations from across Africa to deliberate on the transformative role of higher education in advancing sustainable development.

During the discussions, Prof. Akuno reaffirmed JOOUST’s commitment to community-centered transformation through impactful research, innovation, and international collaboration. She emphasized the University’s strategic vision of nurturing food-secure and healthy communities while contributing meaningfully to national development and policy dialogue.

The forum was officially opened by Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, Principal Secretary, State Department for Science, Research and Innovation, and attended by distinguished diplomats and partners including representatives from the European Union, Belgium, Italy, EDUFI, VLIRUOS, DAAD, and Uni-Italia.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) represented by Prof. Christopher Obel-Gor and Dr. Mary Orinda participated in the HORIZON-STREAMING Project Midterm Evaluation Workshop held at the Vincci Resort Hotel, Djerba Island, Tunisia under the Horizon Europe programme. Convening Partners from Europe and Africa are collaborating to accelerate innovations in sustainable agri-food systems and trade regimes with Europe and Africa. The Workshop reviewed project progress and milestones, strengthened cross-regional and institutional collaboration to identify and promote innovation and climate resilient crops and aligned research outputs with policy priorities and market needs.
JOOUST reaffirmed its leadership in climate-smart agriculture and community-driven innovation, contributing to discussions on strengthening value chains, enhancing research–industry linkages, and promoting inclusive participation of youth and women enhancing her role in driving locally grounded, globally relevant, and impactful interventions.
The university continues to play a pivotal role in STREAMING Consortium collaborations by contributing expertise in Agribusiness and food trade systems research, Community-based innovation, knowledge transfer, and Capacity building among relevant Stakeholders
