Kivumbi Plastic recycling

Kivumbi Plastic recycling Turning plastic waste into valuable new products. Kivumbi Plastic Recycling is a Kenyan/Danish company founded in 2016.

Dumbed plastic waste is an ongoing issue in the streetscape in Kenya and the potential for recycling plastic as a material has shown to be huge. Kivumbi Plastic Recycling is a company built on the thoughts behind circular economy and created in order to help the local areas in Kenya recycle their plastic waste and transform it into value. Our passion lies within recycling plastic products. We see

this as a win-win situation, since we avoid valuable ressources to be dumped in our beautiful nature affecting the wildlife negatively and at the same time we give the opportunity to create new products using a cheaper and more environmental friendly process. Everyday we fight for ressources and recycling by weekly transforming 5-6 tons of plastic waste into new plastic products. On the site in Kericho, we collect and receive plastic waste from the nearby areas. The plastic is being sorted, grinded into small pieces, packed in sacks and transported to Nairobi, where it is sold and made into new products. We operate with hard plastic, among these mainly PP and PE. The objects are separated in blow molded items vs. injection molded items and furthermore sorted within colors, preparing the materials to be remelted and transformed into barrels, jars, cans etc. For more information or any questions, please send us a message and we will come back to you as soon as possible.

Meet Godfrey from Kericho. He has been with Kivumbi since the dawn of the factory. Together with Innocent he works in what they call their office, where the grinder is placed. Here they grind the sorted plastic and fills it into bags. They also do the maintenance work of the grinder, so it runs smoothly and grind the plastic into small and nice pieces.

In his sparetime Godfrey likes to cheer on his favorite team Manchester United. Godfrey is a very calm person who says “Everything is good. I’m happy and busy.”

At Kivumbi we collect and recycle a lot of yoghurt containers. When we recycle one ton of these containers, we prevent 1,3 tons of carbon emissions in the atmosphere. Think about this when you throw out your yoghurt cup into the right bin ♻️👏

Innocent is the machine and maintenance operator. He has been at Kivumbi since the very beginning. Everyday he’s grinding all the sorted plastic into small pieces, ready to pack it, with Godfrey by his side (whom you'll meet in the next post).

When he’s off work you will see him ride his cool motorbike, which he has a great love for. He also loves to watch football, but will not cheer for any British team, he’s a big fan of Real Madrid!

Otieno has been working with plastic for 15 years and has gained a great knowledge within the area. Throughout his time in the plastic business he has noticed a bigger interest within recycling plastic and a better sorting.

Otieno is proud of his job and finds a great honor in providing his family. He is very interested in politics and if the chance came along he would become a politician. One of his biggest goals is to inspire the young generation and make sure they stay out of trouble and make an honest living. He would like to motivate the youth to work hard and take care of each other.

This is Collins. Collins works as an assistant driver next to Philip and has been at Kivumbi for now six months. He will go to the areas surrounding Kericho and pick up plastic waste from local collectors.

Collins loves all kinds of vehicles from motorbikes to big trucks. His favorite car producer is Toyota. But it isn’t only in motor power he goes fast - Collins loves to run and is quite good at it. Especially the 800m he will outrun all the others.

The dawn of plastic ☀️🐘💡♹
In the 1860s playing billiard was a very popular activity in America and Europe. The balls were made from ivory and the demand for the hard material was huge. The Americans realized that if they kept killing the elephants to get ivory, sooner or later there would be no more elephants left, which meant no more ivory. Therefore a reward was given to that person who could invent a substitute material to make billiard balls. John Wesley Hyatt began experimenting and in 1869 he invented celluloid. The first synthetic plastic. By treating nitrated cellulose (derived from cotton) with camphor, he was able to produce a light, strong material that could be crafted to look and feel like ivory. This is when the age of plastics began.

It was such a pleasure for us to visit the County Government of Kericho within Water, Environment, Energy, Forestry & Natural Resources. We discussed Kericho’s future goals within recycling of waste and resources. It is very clear to us that Kericho as a county is very engaged and enthusiastic about their surrounding environment and they are working hard on improving their waste management facilities. They have hopes about creating local recycling plants to make recycling more accessible to everyone. We are looking forward to follow their projects and hopefully we can contribute and collaborate. We thank Engineer Willie Langat and Director Daudi Kitur for their time and all the support they give to Kivumbi Plastic Recycling.
