We are a pioneer health training institution in Kenya offering high quality training The Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK) plays a prominent role in the academic mission of the University. We are pleased to recognize the research, scholarly, and artistic efforts of the graduate faculty and students. Since it's inception, several Master's, specialist and doctoral degrees have been awarded. Cu

rrently there is a high ratio of students and degrees awarded reflecting the breadth of the University's graduate programs and resources, the strength of the graduate faculty with a long tradition of personal and professional concern for students, and the opportunities afforded graduate students for involvement, recognition and support. Among these are the admission of women on an equal basis as men; the recognition of creative expression and artistic production as the basis for a graduate degree in lieu of a thesis or dissertation (leading to the development of the Master of Fine Arts degree) and the ranking of many graduate programs in the first quartile of national rankings. The traditions of access, equality, diversity among the graduate student body, and of recognition of quality graduate programs reflect the University's Strategic Plan and serve as constant goals. In 2012, the GLUK received The University Charter for its efforts to support diversity in education.and is recognized for its contributions to mentoring future graduate students from underrepresented groups . The quality of graduate programs administered by the GLUK is reflected in the recognition received by its students and faculty. The graduate faculty numbers almost 1200, and many are recognized as outstanding scholars. In the past five years alone

🌍💚 ADVANCING YOUTH-LED CLIMATE ACTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Today, Mr. Ojwang Phanuel, Chairperson of the Great Lakes University of Kisumu Environmental Club (GLUK EC) and General University Representative, KIUESA, had the privilege of making a courtesy visit to Ubunifu Hub in Nairobi, the headquarters of Greenpeace Africa.
During the visit, Mr. Ojwang had the opportunity to meet and engage with Ben, the General Volunteer Training Lead, alongside other leaders, on possible avenues for engaging, equipping, and empowering young people to take meaningful action on climate change and environmental protection.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of protecting the human environment by promoting mental health, well-being, dignity, resilience, and stronger communities as an integral part of environmental action.
The engagement was insightful and inspiring, and Mr. Ojwang looks forward to exploring opportunities for youth-led climate action, environmental awareness, volunteerism, community engagement, and mental health advocacy.

Because protecting the environment is not only about safeguarding nature—it is also about protecting the people who live in it. 🌱🧠🤝

The EU-funded Aquadevbus Project has began it's week-long final workshop today in Kisumu, drawing partners from Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK), Rongo University, the Arctic University of Norway, Turku University of Applied Sciences (TUAS), Livia, Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KEMFRI), Lolwe Aquaculture K Ltd, and Bolena Enterprises to mark the close of an initiative aimed at transforming aquaculture education in Kenya.

In her opening remarks on the first day of the meeting, GLUK Vice Chancellor and Project Manager, Prof. Hazel Miseda-Mumbo is urging partners to take pride not only in tangible outputs but also in the knowledge networks and opportunities the project has generated, notably the improved quality of fish feeds. She is calling for a strong final push to conclude the work well.

Rongo University Vice Chancellor Prof. Samuel Gudu is echoing this, highlighting the success of exchange programmes in transferring knowledge on fish education and feed production, which have left farmers visibly satisfied. He notes that the project ranks among Rongo's largest EU-funded endeavours and has equipped staff with valuable skills in writing winning grant proposal.

Prof. Gudu notes that the region still lacks the capacity to fully harness the potential of Lake Victoria and fish ponds.

Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KEMFRI) CEO Dr. Paul O***a (represented by the institute's Research Scientist, Ms. Venny Mziri) noted that practical learning was one of the most important lessons from Aquadevbus Project. Besides, the project demostrated the power of partnership bringing together universities, industry, government, research institutions and international partners. He urged the partners to ensure that the partnerships continue even at the end of the project.

He suggests: "Let us not allow the conclusion of the project to become the conclusion of the partnerships; let the networks created continue; let the curricula and the learning materials developed continue to evolve in response to the changing needs of the aquaculture sector; Let the laboratories, farms, field stations and research facilities created continue to serve as learning environments."
