Cases of sexual and gender-based violence have increased since the outbreak of COVID-19. National responses must address the specific needs of women and girls as they implement prevention and containment measures. States should also ensure a systematic collection of sex-disaggregated data to understand the gender-specific human rights impact of COVID-19.
In the prevention, containment and recovery plans on COVID-19, governments and stakeholders must apply a gendered lens to improve outcomes, not only for women, but all people affected by the virus and contribute to saving lives in Africa.

The advent of COVID-19 has exacerbated challenges in Africa's education system and reinforces the need for fit for context, innovative and scalable solutions in education. There is the need to promote innovation in the entire education and skills development ecosystems, taking advantage of the digital revolution, in order to increase its impact and also ensure that disadvantaged groups are not left out.

The African Union Commission in recognition of this urgent need is calling for youth Africans with homegrown sustainable education innovations to apply to win up to USD 100,000 in funding and technical assistance to scale up their projects.
