Hami, an Ethiopian national, is among the recent trainees undertaking the STCW Basic Safety Training Course at Bandari Maritime Academy in Mombasa.

With two bachelor’s degrees—one in Hotel and Tourism Management and another in Business Management—Hami had long dreamed of pursuing a career at sea. Today, that dream is becoming a reality after enrolling at Bandari Maritime Academy.

Driven by his desire to work in the maritime industry, particularly aboard cruise ships, Hami travelled to Kenya to undertake the six-day STCW Basic Safety Training Course at the Academy.

The distance between Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, is approximately 1,054 kilometers (about 655 miles). However, the distance did not deter Hami from choosing Bandari Maritime Academy, which he considers one of the leading maritime training institutions in the East African region.

“I followed Bandari Maritime Academy closely through its social media platforms, and the way the Academy conducts its STCW Basic Safety Training convinced me that it was the best place for me to train,” Hami said.

According to Hami, his experience at the Academy has exceeded his expectations. He particularly commended the institution’s well-equipped training facilities and competent instructors.

“What I have experienced here is special. I must say that Kenya has invested in the infrastructure and facilities needed to support Bandari Maritime Academy in advancing its mandate and contributing to the growth of the Blue Economy,” he said.

Hami has encouraged Kenyan youth to take advantage of the opportunities available at Bandari Maritime Academy and acquire the skills and qualifications needed to pursue careers at sea.

He also urged prospective seafarers from other countries to consider Bandari Maritime Academy for their maritime training needs.

For Hami, the journey from Ethiopia to Mombasa is more than just a trip across borders—it is a step towards fulfilling his dream of building a career in the global maritime industry.

Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA), led by Board Member Ms. Grace Sian, is spearheading negotiations with maritime institutions in Jakarta, Indonesia, aimed at strengthening capacity building, student exchange programmes, and graduate and postgraduate training opportunities.

The initiative is part of BMA’s commitment to ensuring that its cadets receive training that meets the highest international standards and that their qualifications and competencies are internationally recognized.

Through strategic partnerships with leading maritime institutions and industry stakeholders, BMA seeks to enhance the quality, competitiveness, and global mobility of its graduates.

Among the institutions and agencies BMA is engaging are the Jakarta Merchant Marine Higher Education Center, Banten Merchant Marine Polytechnic, and the Consortium of Indonesia Manning Agencies, among others.

The BMA delegation comprises Senior Deputy Director Corporate Services, CPA Evans Oyieyo; Ag. Senior Deputy Director Maritime Transport Operations Training, Mr. Enock Okemwa; and Office Administrative Assistant, Ms. Fatima Shemni.

Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) Students’ Council has successfully concluded a four-day leadership, governance, and self-conduct induction programme held in Malindi.

The induction, conducted under the guidance of BMA Deputy Director and Registrar, Dr. Irene Mugo, and facilitated by the Afrika Tulivu Organization, was designed to equip the newly inaugurated council members with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to effectively discharge their mandate as representatives of the Academy’s cadet community.

Throughout the four-day programme, the student leaders attended sessions covering key principles of good governance, including integrity, accountability, inclusivity, responsible leadership, and respect for human rights.

The sessions also emphasized ethical conduct, peaceful coexistence, effective representation, and the importance of placing the interests and welfare of fellow cadets at the heart of student leadership.

The programme provided an important platform for council members to reflect on their roles and responsibilities while strengthening their capacity to lead with professionalism, fairness and accountability.

As they begin their tenure, the BMA Students’ Council is expected to put into practice the knowledge, skills and values gained during the induction to promote effective, inclusive and responsible leadership across the Academy.

Newly admitted cadets at Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) are undergoing regimental training led by officers from the Kenya Coast Guard Service as they prepare to embark on their maritime careers.

Regimental training is a structured, paramilitary-style induction programme designed to instill discipline, teamwork, physical fitness, resilience, and leadership—essential qualities for life and service at sea.

Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA), led by Chief Executive Officer Dr. Eric Katana, is participating in the 5th International Blue Economy Conference 2026 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Held under the theme Powering Blue Initiatives for Sustainable Economic Growth in Africa, the conference brings together experts and stakeholders to explore the skills, knowledge and expertise required to unlock Africa’s full Blue Economy potential.

Discussions are focusing on innovation, emerging technologies, entrepreneurship and investment, as well as port modernization and digitalization in the maritime sector.
