Importance of Weight monitoring in a beef feedlot
Weight here refers to the number of kilos your livestock weighs whether dead or alive.
There are two weights:
1. Live weight... This is the weight in kilos of the live and walking animal
2. Dead weight or carcass weight.,.. referring to the weight in kilos of slaughtered animal less ovals, skin, hooves, head.
In commercial beef industry, buyers base their price rate on dead weight. So farmers should not be excited much about the live weight.
Dead weight is approximated to be about 51% of the live weight of an animal.
Weighting schedule
In a feedlot formation, weighting is done as follows:
1. Immediately the animals enter the feedlot.
2. Sequentially after every two weeks inorder to ascertain growth pattern
3. At loading to the market
Kindly note that weighting is done early In the morning before the animals are fed or have water. This is to avoid capturing the weight of feeds.

FEEDLOT TRAINING

Feedlot is a technical word for confining animals, mainly beef and feeding them on the best food ratios to be ready for the market in the shortest time possible. The duration can vary from 60 – 120 days. During feedlot, animals are fed for maximum weight gain. The diet is majorly high in carbohydrate, sufficient proteins and optimum mineral salts. During this period, these animals depending on age and nutrition can gain between 50 – 200 kilos.

Major causes of failure in feedlot operations

Beef fattening or feedlot operations requires that the farmer be highly involved in the formative stages.
Just like any other business operation, feedloters face challenges that can bring down the business. It is therefore paramount to have control on the following do as too minimize the possible occurance of losses.

1. Staff. Employees running the feedlot are the main causes of failure in feedlots. Farmers must get out of their way and employ qualified staff. Many of farmers turn to employ relatives or village mates and unqualified labour force inorder to minimize on cost. Yes , this will work in the short time, but it's a costly gamble in the long run. Always ensure you employ someone you can charge in court Incase of negligence at work. Pay them well to avoid the temptations to steal your feeds and other farm implements.
You must have a qualified Vet as your farm manager so as to guide the feeders. A store keeper to monitor flow of farm inputs and keep proper records.

2. Feeds. I have observed farmers trying to make a saving by purchasing low quality hay and silage. Remember whenever you feed your animals on gabbage, you get gabbage as your output. The processed livestock feeds industry in Kenya is dotted with low quality products. It's advisable that farmers get to formulate their own fattening concentrate at the farm to be sure of nutritional content.

3. Livestock. Investing in poor quality animals can be a starting point for a feedlot failure. Feedlot animals must exhibit potential for growth, must weigh above 200kg, must not he older than 4 years, must not have disabilities , must not be heavy feeders
