Importance of Weight monitoring in a beef feedlot
Weight here refers to the number of kilos your livestock weighs whether dead or alive.
There are two weights:
1. Live weight... This is the weight in kilos of the live and walking animal
2. Dead weight or carcass weight.,.. referring to the weight in kilos of slaughtered animal less ovals, skin, hooves, head.
In commercial beef industry, buyers base their price rate on dead weight. So farmers should not be excited much about the live weight.
Dead weight is approximated to be about 51% of the live weight of an animal.
Weighting schedule
In a feedlot formation, weighting is done as follows:
1. Immediately the animals enter the feedlot.
2. Sequentially after every two weeks inorder to ascertain growth pattern
3. At loading to the market
Kindly note that weighting is done early In the morning before the animals are fed or have water. This is to avoid capturing the weight of feeds.
