🎤 THE 9TH “KENYA GOOD VOICE” CHINESE SINGING COMPETITION (FINALS)

On Tuesday, the 17th of March 2026, the Confucius Institute at Kenyatta University successfully hosted the 9th “Kenya Good Voice” Chinese Singing Competition (Finals), bringing together talented students from partner schools across Kenya in a vibrant celebration of music and culture.

The event highlighted the power of music as a universal language, promoting cultural exchange and strengthening the bond between Kenya and China. Students delivered outstanding performances, showcasing impressive vocal skills, confidence, and mastery of Chinese songs.

🏆 Congratulations to John Mark Shibero, who emerged as the winner with his captivating performance of Huan Yan, retaining his championship title!

The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Mr. Tang Jianjun, the Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, and officially opened by Prof. Mathew Piero Ngugi on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Okumu. Speakers emphasised the importance of nurturing creativity, talent, and intercultural understanding among young people.

🥋 CHINESE CULTURE LECTURE SERIES: THE FUNCTIONS AND VALUES OF WUSHU

An exciting and enriching evening at the Confucius Institute, Kenyatta University!

On Wednesday, 25th, students and staff gathered at the Multifunctional Hall for an insightful Wushu lecture delivered by Professor Wang Sen, who is also the Dean of the Department of Martial Arts and Traditional Ethnic Sports at Shandong Normal University. He was joined by martial arts instructors Guo Ziyou and Wang Fazhi, who will be training our students over the next six months.

The session combined rich cultural insights with thrilling live demonstrations, showcasing the beauty, discipline, and philosophy behind Wushu. Even more exciting, students got a chance to participate in a hands-on training session—learning basic techniques and experiencing the art firsthand!

From tradition to modern science, the lecture highlighted how Wushu promotes fitness, discipline, and cultural exchange, strengthening the bond between Kenya and China.

🎓 The Confucius Institute at Kenyatta University successfully conducted its first HSK & HSKK examinations of 2026 on January 24!

Over 150 candidates participated across all levels (HSK 1–6 and HSKK beginner to advanced), marking a strong start to the year in Chinese language proficiency assessment.

The exams were smoothly administered under the supervision of the Institute’s leadership and dedicated staff, ensuring professionalism, integrity, and a conducive environment for all candidates.

Beyond assessment, the experience inspired many learners to advance their Chinese language journey, with several already expressing interest in higher-level examinations and courses.

🎉 Spring Festival 2026 – Year of the Horse

The Confucius Institute at Kenyatta University (KUCI) proudly joined the Spring Festival celebrations on 8th February at Two Rivers Mall, Nairobi.

From spectacular dragon and lion dances to traditional Chinese dances, music, calligraphy, and hands-on cultural activities, the day was filled with joy, color, and cultural exchange. KU students also impressed the audience with a heartfelt performance of “My Motherland and I.”

We were honored to celebrate alongside H.E. Guo Haiyan, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya; UNON Director-General Zainab Bangura; PS Tourism and Wildlife John Ololtuaa, representing Cabinet Secretary Hon. Rebecca Miano; Permanent Secretary for Children Services Ms. Carren Ageng’o; other Kenyan government officials; and hundreds of local and international visitors.

As the Year of the Horse begins, KUCI continues to strengthen Kenya–China friendship through language, culture, and people-to-people exchange.

The World Chinese Language Conference 2025 brought together over 5,000 participants from 160+ countries under the theme “Innovation Leads, AI Empowers: Learning Chinese Without Borders.”

KUCI was represented by Prof. Zhou Xiaodong, Dr. Kenneth Ngure, and Dr. Elizabeth Mutisya.

A key highlight was the launch of the International Chinese Language Education Knowledge Graph, an AI-powered tool transforming global Chinese language learning.

📚✨ Kenya’s First Chinese Poetry Recitation Competition Held at KU! 🇰🇪🇨🇳

On 5th November 2025, the Kenyatta University Confucius Institute hosted the first-ever National Chinese Poetry Recitation Competition in Kenya — a major step in promoting Chinese culture and literature.

Chief guest Prof. David Minja shared insights from his recent visit to China, including his inspiring visit to the birthplace of Confucius, which strengthened his appreciation for Chinese culture.

The event brought together 27 students from various institutions, with 13 finalists delivering impressive recitations.
Local Director Prof. Leonard Chacha praised the event, saying “poetry is a bridge that connects hearts, cultures, and generations.”

🏆 Winner: Gloria Nyomenda Gecheki, with a powerful recitation of Qin Yuan Chun • Changsha.

Chinese Director Prof. Zhou Xiaodong encouraged students to keep improving their Chinese language skills and highlighted scholarship opportunities—over 300 students have already benefited from partnerships with Shandong Normal University.

📢 Kenyatta University Delegation Visits Shandong Normal University, China

From October 25th to November 1st, a Kenyatta University delegation led by Prof. Caroline Thoruwa, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Outreach, visited Shandong Normal University (SDNU) in China for the Annual Educators Delegates Seminar.

Prof. Thoruwa delivered a powerful keynote address showcasing KUCI’s milestones — including the successful hosting of over 300 Kenyan students at SDNU and the expanding opportunities for cultural immersion and academic exchange between the two institutions.

Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival 2025 at the Confucius Institute!

On October 2nd, our Confucius Institute was vibrant with the spirit of one of China’s most loved festivals. The day was filled with cultural performances, traditional foods, hands-on crafts, and beautiful costumes. It was a time for joy and learning.

Highlights included:
- A heartfelt performance of “May Our Love Last Forever”
- An exciting martial arts demonstration
- The graceful “Land of Etiquette” dance
- A mooncake-making and tasting session led by Prof. Leonard Chacha Mwita and Prof. Zhou Xiaodong
- Paper cutting and rubbing crafts
- A stunning Chinese costume experience

Guests also watched a short video about the origins of the Moon Festival, which helped deepen their appreciation for this special occasion.

On Wednesday, September 24th, the Confucius Institute Multi-function Hall came alive as we welcomed students from KBA Schools and Sukari Presbyterian School for a vibrant celebration of culture and learning!

The event was proudly hosted by Prof. Leonard Chacha Mwita (Local Director) and Prof. Zhou Xiaodong (Chinese Director), and officially opened by our esteemed guest of honor, Prof. Caroline Langat Thoruwa, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Outreach.

🌟 Meet Our New Confucius Institute Director: Prof. Leonard Chacha Mwita! 🌟

We are excited to welcome Prof. Leonard Chacha Mwita as the incoming Director of the Confucius Institute at Kenyatta University. An accomplished linguist and translator, Prof. Mwita brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role.

He holds a Master of Arts in Kiswahili from Kenyatta University, and both a Master of Arts and PhD in Linguistics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). With 27 years at Kenyatta University, he currently teaches in the Department of Kiswahili and African Languages and has served in various leadership roles including Chairman of Department, Director of the Institute of African Studies, and Associate/Deputy Dean of the Graduate School.

His research interests include Bantu linguistics, language change, and metrical studies. Outside of academia, Prof. Mwita enjoys volleyball, table tennis, and jogging to stay fit.

Join us in congratulating Prof. Mwita as he takes on this exciting new chapter alongside Chinese Director Prof. Zhou Xiaodong and the Confucius Institute team!
