Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has received a Nurture Conservation research grant award of €950, 646 from the Cherasco Worldwide Institute of Snail Breeding to advance its snail breeding value chain research, with a focus on developing a cough syrup.

The grant is a culmination of three rounds of funding calls that attracted more than ten countries from across the globe. Kenya, through JKUAT, outsmarted Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon, to the grant award.

The Principal Investigator, Dr. Paul Kinoti, credits the award to the novelty of the innovation and its potential for change as a major consideration that set the university apart as the best from the rest.

Prof. Elisha Njue Mugai of the Department of Horticulture and Food Security, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has developed a digital lime calculator that is used to estimate liming requirements for the acid highland soils of Kenya.

Soil acidity is one of the main causes of low crop yields in the highlands of Kenya that is dominated by soils known as Nitisols.

According to the experts, it is imperative to apply the right amounts of lime to raise the pH (lower acidity) to desired levels because under-liming may not lead to optimal crop yields, while over-liming is not only a waste of money by the farmer, but can lead to decreased yields.

High cost commercial crop fertilizers is a major factor affecting returns from agricultural production. This situation is currently a major concern in many farming communities. Read below how new strategies and insights may address this constraint and boost productivity and returns as reported in two studies. The studies suggest significant benefits in agricultural farming systems. 👇👇
Engineered ammonia-producing bacteria and freely occuring earthworms could replace high cost commercial crop fertilizers leading to sustainable ways of soil fertility management, reduced environmental pollution and lower production costs for farmers, thanks to two separate research findings. In one of the study, the candidate bacteria is Azotobacter vinelandii which is part of the diazotroph family already known to biologically fix nitrogen from the atmosphere. The researchers identified a particular gene in this bacteria that seems to be involved in regulating its natural ammonia production but are still investigating how this gene drives the ammonia production. The findings demonstrate the usefulness of the engineered microbes as biofertilizers in Agriculture. For your further reading, their findings are published in the Journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology 👉https://doi.org/10.1128/AEM.01876-21
In a separate study, other researchers suggest new novel insights in the soil nitrogen cycle via the role of living soil animals (earthworms) in nutrient cycling and soil enrichment. Their findings are published in the Journal Soil Biology and Biochemistry 👉 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.soilbio.2022.108582
