Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) has approved six standards that will guide development of eco- and social friendly cities that use information and communications technology to facilitate transformation of urban infrastructure in smart and sustainable way.

The standards address issues such as real-time data and informatics exchange, smart transportation and electric power infrastructure.

We expect Kebs to reign on the local Regulatory Agencies to enforce these and existing ones. Nairobi is now arguably, the noisiest and chaotic city in the world. We seem to thrive in chaotic public transport sector, governed by indiscipline, reckless and drunken driving, unbearable noise and pollution emanating from poorly maintained vehicles, many now fitted with ear-blasting noise exhaust gadgets! Their drivers think they are in Formula One racing!

Kebs should ban importation of these noise producing exhaust system gadgets. These are certainly not part of any standard.

Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) and Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS) are both Kenya public parastatals duplicating many roles as far as import/export of food commodities into Kenya.

Farmers and food traders have suffered the wrath of the guidelines and obstacles of dealing in the said items within the East Africa Community. When food items are held on for months at the borders due to AFA tough guidelines, will the same items still be fit for human consumption?

These food items should be cleared within 24 hours on reaching the border posts. Duplication of services by KEPHIS and AFA is not good for business. One of them should be disbanded.

Covid-19 pandemic has shown how vulnerable humanity is to infection and diseases. However, many of us, particularly adults, still behave as if we are not faced with a tragedy!

Other life threatening conditions have taken back seat.

The least data transmission Safaricom and Communications Authority of Kenya should offer for the 5G fibre-optic internet service broadband should be 1GB/s for long term future use. We have just been introduced to 4G, now we have to upgrade, meaning spending more cash to acquire 5G enabled gadgets. Am not boarding for anything less than 1GB per second.

Kenya's Government Spokesman Col. (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna says Kenya taxes are comparable to those of Europe! A "small" company called Daimler, the manufacturers of Mercedes Benz grossed about KSh 22.5 trillion in 2019, with a profit of KSh 4 trillion. Kenya is grappling on how to raise an Annual Budget of 2021/2022 of KSh 3 trillion!

Germany's 2019 GDP stood at Kenya Sh 425 trillion with each German taking each person taking home about KSh 5.1 million! How would you even dare compare?

As millions in Kenya face hunger, farmers in the North Rift region of Kenya are hoarding maize. Agriculture and Food Authority of Kenya last week banned importation of maize from Uganda and Tanzania on safety concerns – that tests on maize samples from the two countries showed high levels of poisons beyond acceptable levels. This is good news for maize cartels to ship in maize from the high seas! We have not been told of what happened to the poisonous and toxic maize that was shipped into Kenya a few years ago.

Farmers interviewed about the ban are happy with it, claiming maize from the two countries is cheap! Uganda buys its fertilizers and seeds from Kenya, talk of double standards! The main importers of maize from Uganda, for example, are from this region, hence National Cereals Board cannot afford the high prices that the farmers are demanding.

How are Uganda and Tanzania farmers able to produce more with less mechanization and sell maize cheaply? With the East Africa Community, COMESA Trade Agreements and Protocols, what is the future of business in these regions?

Our Kenya MPs, and now Senators and politicians in general are very good mourners! They have voiced concerns over cancer burden as they mourn Juja MP Francis Waititu, who died after a long battle with cancer.

On January 11, 2009, March 10, 2010, March 2015 and in many other fora, Kenyans have been promised heaven and earth on how cancer will be managed. Expect more talk and promises! Meanwhile in Kisumu County, what progress has been made over the last 40 years, promises, promises, and more promises!

The Biggest Obstacle in the Improvement of Health Services in Kenya and Africa for that matter, is the management of Healthcare Workers. How can the so called Human Resources Management personnel manage professionals in these diverse health fields.

Majority are just there to frustrate professionals. They add no value to health services. Personnel Files disappear, selective confirmation of services and promotions, nonpayment of benefits or pensions. They rarely respond to inquiries. Why the firing, exodus and brain drain of health professionals and poor services? It time for Professional Line Management!
