The Pioneer, Prof. Shem Wandiga
Professor Shem Wandiga directly credited his career success to the historic African Students Airlift project organized by Tom Mboya. The airlift provided him with the life-changing opportunity to leave Kenya and pursue elite scientific training in the United States.

Prof. Wandiga was the first indigenous African Chairman of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Nairobi. A pioneer.

Professor Shem Wandiga was the very first Principal of the College of Biological and Physical Sciences (CBPS)

A gentle giant, a pioneer, Rest in Peace Prof.

Dear Colleagues and Students of Prof. Raphael Munavu,

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Prof. Raphael Munavu on 26th April 2026. As his colleagues, students, and all the people he touched, we need to come together to give Prof. Munavu the send-off he truly deserves.

We kindly request that you contribute to this meaningful cause.

Please send your MPESA contribution to Solomon using the following number: +254729446377

Once all contributions are gathered, we will pool the funds and transfer the total amount on behalf of us all.

This is a special opportunity for us to give Prof. Munavu a fitting farewell in recognition of his incredible impact on his colleagues, students, and the wider university community.

Thank you for your support

Abstract

Being able to sense and quantify is ubiquitous to for instance, water
monitoring and clinical diagnostics. There is a drive towards
point-of-use analysis, which requires sensors and analytical
microsystems. Current point-of-use analysis based on lateral flow
devices provide qualitative and at best semi-quantitative information.
Label-free optical sensors based on refractive index measurements can
overcome this limitation. In this presentation, I will discuss some of
our research on leaky waveguide (LW) sensors and microsystems for
clinical diagnostics

The group is led by Dr Ruchi Gupta. Our research is focused on developing point-of-use, wearable, and implantable sensors and microfluidics (SAM) systems to measure biochemical markers for timely and accurate diagnosis of diseases, which is a first step towards offering right treatment at the right....
