The Faculty of Science, which is clearly distinguished by its icon the University tower, was formed with the advent of the University College in Colombo in 1913. It continued in the same location with the establishment of the University of Ceylon in 1942. Though a section of the University moved to Peradeniya in 1949, the Faculty of Science continued in Colombo. The Faculty, in 1967, became a part

of the University of Colombo, Ceylon, later re-named University of Ceylon, Colombo. In 1972 the Faculty came under the University of Sri Lanka, Colombo Campus and finally in 1978, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Presently the Faculty of Science has about 1529 undergraduate students and 371 postgraduate students, 102 academic staff and 104 other staff. The annual intake to the Faculty increased to 487 in 2007 with the introduction of two new streams, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Industrial Statistics & Mathematical Finance.

D. P. P. Samarasekara Peace Prize - Mr. E. M. V. N. Thismalpola

Mr. Edirisooriya Mudiyanselage Vinuk Nanthusa Thismalpola, a proud alumnus of Ananda College and Vidura College, graduated from the Faculty of Science with a Bachelor of Science Honours in Applied Statistics, securing a Second Class Upper Division. He distinguished himself through exemplary leadership and service as President of the Leo Club of University of Colombo Faculty of Science, acclaimed Best Club, while he was recognised as Best Club President in Leo District 306 D1. Representing Sri Lanka and the University of Colombo in Youth Forums at Hong Kong and Japan, his leadership transcended national boundaries. His enduring contribution lies in advancing social harmony through humanitarian relief, women’s empowerment, climate action, youth leadership, legal awareness, and public health. As a founding member of We Help Sri Lanka, he supported Cyclone Ditwah relief efforts and contributed to Sri Lanka’s National Youth Policy and also leading the community as a Youth Climate Ambassador. He successfully passed the Attorney-at-Law Final Bar Examination, revived the Faculty Dancing Society as it’s President, earned Faculty Sports Awards in badminton, tennis, and karate, and compered over 140 events. His journey embodies compassionate service and a steadfast commitment to empowering communities.
