Establishment of Crop Farm – Department of Biosystems Technology

The Department of Biosystems Technology, is pleased to announce the establishment of a crop farm as part of its practical learning initiatives.

This farm has been developed to support teaching and hands-on training under the courses Principles of Organic Farming and Forage Science and Production Technology. At present, the farm is actively engaged in the cultivation of vegetables, as well as the production of pastures and fodder crops. This initiative provides students with valuable practical exposure to modern agricultural practices, enhancing their technical skills and knowledge in sustainable crop production.

The Department extends its sincere gratitude to Prof. (Mrs). S. Sivachandiran ,Former Dean , Faculty of Technology, Prof. K. Pakeerathan, Dean , Faculty of Agriculture, and Mr. S. Sritharan, Farm Manager, for their continuous support in the establishment of the crop farm.

Bridging aquaculture theory with real-world practices!

The second-year students of the Department of Biosystems Technology had a field visit as a part of the Aquatic Bioresource Production Technology course.

During this educational visit, students first traveled to Pallikuda Beach, where they had the opportunity to interact directly with local fishermen. The discussions focused on aquaculture practices, traditional fishing methods, and the challenges faced by coastal fishing communities, providing students with valuable real-world insights beyond classroom learning.

The visit continued to Ceylon Shrimp Farm, where students observed modern shrimp farming techniques, farm management practices, and sustainable aquaculture operations. This experience allowed them to better understand commercial aquaculture production systems.

Finally, the group visited National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) at Poonakary, where they learned about government initiatives, research activities, and development programs aimed at promoting sustainable aquaculture in Sri Lanka.

We appreciate the support of the fishermen at Pallikuda Beach, the team at Ceylon Shrimp Farm, and the officers at NAQDA Poonakary for their warm hospitality, insightful guidance, and for making this visit both informative and inspiring.

Final year Construction Technology specialisation students had a field visit to bridge construction sites along the Paranthan–Karaichchi–Mullaitivu road.

The visit provided valuable hands-on exposure, where students learned about key aspects of bridge construction including abutments, piers, RCC slab placement, infill concrete, and cofferdam foundation works.

It was an excellent opportunity for students to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world engineering practices, supported by insightful explanations from site engineers and contractors.

We are delighted to announce that Dr. M. Nithurshan, Senior Lecturer at Department of Engineering Technology, University of Jaffna has been awarded the National Science Foundation, Sri Lanka (NSF) Competitive Research Grant 2025, valued at LKR 2 million.

The grant has been awarded for his research project titled:
“Development of Sustainable High-Performance Cementitious Materials by Replacing OPC with Alternative Binders and Additives.”

We warmly congratulate Dr. Nithurshan and wish him every success in his research.
