✍Barn Owls are moderately common, but generally hard to see, as they are mostly active at night. During the day, the birds roost on concealed tree branches. Barn Owls are medium sized birds (females slightly larger than males), with a 'heart-shaped' facial disc. Young birds are similar to adults in plumage. When threatened, the Barn Owl crouches down and spreads its wings.🦉😀

By day the Barn Owl roosts in hollow logs, caves or dense trees, and is usually seen alone or in pairs. The preferred habitat is open, often arid (dry) country, such as farms, heath and lightly wooded forest.🌳🌲🌱

Barn Owls feed mostly on small mammals, mainly rodents, and birds, but some insects, frogs and lizards are also eaten. One of the more favoured food is the introduced House Mouse. Barn Owls hunt in flight, searching for prey on the ground using their exceptional hearing.🐁🐸🐥

Owls are renowned for their striking appearance, featuring large forward-facing eyes tailored for excellent night vision.🦉🤩
However, these eyes are unable to move within their sockets due to evolutionary adaptations suited to their nocturnal hunting lifestyle.🌺⚡🕊

Owls' eyes are abundant in light-sensitive rod cells, facilitating low-light vision.
To compensate for their immobile eyes, owls have developed remarkable head mobility, enabling them to swivel their heads nearly 270 degrees. This, combined with their forward-facing eyes, provides binocular vision and depth perception, making them adept nocturnal hunters. 🌻🙆‍♂️🦅

Despite the apparent limitation of immobile eyes, owls demonstrate nature's remarkable ability to adapt and excel in their specific ecological niche.💐🦉

"Let's talk about the awe-inspiring homing pigeons 🐦🧭!

Not only are they known for their charming coos, but these avian wonders also possess an extraordinary navigation system. Whether they're sent on missions during wartime or simply embarking on long journeys, homing pigeons have the uncanny ability to return home, even from hundreds of miles away.

Their secret sauce? Scientists believe it's a mix of visual landmarks, Earth's magnetic field, and their acute sense of smell. 🌍🧲👃

Next time you spot a pigeon in your city, remember that beneath those urban feathers lies a traveler with an amazing story to tell. 🌆✨

*Avian Diaries* 🐓🦃🦚

Did you know that the *rooster* has an *excellent memory?* 😳😱

Yes that is true;

The records show that they can recognize individual members of other species. They can tell the difference between humans from each other. 👀🫣

Studies show they can recognize up to 100 faces of humans around them. 🐓🐓

They can solve puzzles by pecking the pieces with their beaks to let their human helpers know which ones go where. Chickens have also been caught on tape finding treats hidden under cups. 🤩🤩

Though literature on their intelligence, cognition, and behaviour is still quite limited, there is enough scientific and anecdotal evidence that chickens and roosters are social, intelligent, affectionate, and empathetic. 🐓✨

*"Avian Diaries Series"* 🕊🌺🌻

Hummingbirds, found primarily in the Americas, are extraordinary birds known for their unique attributes. Their most striking feature is their unparalleled flight abilities, allowing them to hover, fly backward, and perform acrobatics thanks to rapid figure-eight wing movements. These can reach up to 1,200 beats per minute during flight. 😍🌻

Their high metabolism matches their active lifestyle, requiring them to consume large amounts of food daily, including nectar from vibrant flowers. Their impressive color vision, including the ability to see ultraviolet light, helps them locate these food sources.🌺🐦

Hummingbirds employ torpor as an energy-saving strategy during food scarcity or rest, entering a hibernation-like state. Reproduction involves tiny camouflaged eggs and an annual feather molt, illustrating their unique life cycle.💐⚡

"Avian Diaries Series" 🕊🌻🐦

The ostrich is the world's largest, living bird and has its home in the African Savannahs and open woodlands. 🕊️🍀

Its height is 2.7m and it can weigh as much as 159kg. In height the ostrich is one metre taller than an average man and its weight equals that of two men. The ostrich has a long, bare neck, long, sturdy legs and a bulky body covered with feathers.

The male ostrich has black feathers with a white tail while the females are mostly brown. Both male and female ostriches have small heads, a short, wide beak and big brown eyes with long dark lashes and their sight is excellent.🐦‍⬛😃

They can cover over 70 km per hour using their powerful, sturdy legs. Their legs are useful in self defence too for the long two toed feet have a sharp claw. An ostrich can kick a predator to death.

Ostrich eggs are the largest in the world.🪺🐣

*"Avian Diaries Series "* 🕊🌻🦚

You might be imagining a small bird with long legs, a rounded head with a medium to long bill, and a long and somewhat slender body. Perhaps it is gray or brown, mostly white, or some combination of colors. 😧👻

Sandpipers can be found all over the world, on every continent except Antarctica. Many varieties live exclusively on or near the shore. Others live in grasslands or wetlands. Most prefer to at least have access to water sources🐦🌊

In flight, the telltale white rump distinguishes it from all similar species. This small sandpiper makes one of the longest migrations of any North American bird, sometimes flying 2,500 miles without a rest. 🙀🌺😇

With their richly spotted breeding plumage, teetering gait, stuttering wingbeats, and showy courtship dances, this bird is among the most notable and memorable shorebirds in North America.🕊🐥🍂
