* **Faithful Translation:** Attempts to reproduce the precise contextual meaning of the original within the constraints of the target language's grammatical structures. It tries to be completely true to the intentions of the writer.

* **Semantic Translation:** More flexible than faithful translation. It takes into account the aesthetic value (the beautiful sound, natural flow) of the source text, compromising on meaning slightly if it sounds too harsh or awkward.

These methods lean toward making the text natural, clear, and culturally appropriate for the target reader.
* **Communicative Translation:** Attempts to render the exact contextual meaning of the original in such a way that both content and language are readily acceptable and comprehensible to the readership. (Newmark considers this and Semantic translation to be the most effective methods).
* *Example:* "Keep off the grass" \rightarrow Translated communicatively as "ممنوع السير على العشب" (instead of literally saying "احفظ بعيداً عن العشب").
* **Idiomatic Translation:** Reproduces the 'message' of the original but tends to distort nuances of meaning by preferring colloquialisms and idioms where these do not exist in the original.
* *Example:* "He passed away" \rightarrow "انتقل إلى الرفيق الأعلى" or "توفاه الله" (using culturally natural idioms for death).
* **Free Translation:** Reproduces the matter without the manner, or the content without the form of the original. It is usually a much longer paraphrasing.
* *Example:* Explaining a brief 4-word English political slogan by using a 2-sentence descriptive paragraph in Arabic to convey the exact same political background.
* **Adaptation:** This is the freest form of translation. It is used mainly for plays (comedies) and poetry. The themes, characters, and plots are usually preserved, but the SL culture is converted to the TL culture.
