MDX Employability Service

MDX Employability Service OUR STATEMENT OF SERVICE

The competition for graduate employment is tougher than ever before. A degree alone isn't enough.

We help MDX students achieve their career objectives by providing access to one-on-one career advice, employability skills development classes, workshops and events, work experience, internship opportunities and employment or postgraduate opportunities. Students need to demonstrate to employers that they're aware of the skills they've developed through their degrees - their ability to think critic

ally, work independently, and communicate effectively. The Employability Service is here to help and support our students throughout their time with us. We give them the chance to build and develop skills through workshops, careers fairs, and employer events. They will guide you through finding and securing work experience, introduce you to employers and help you secure a graduate job once you finish your degree. Our Mission: We help MDX students to achieve their career objectives by providing access to one on one career advice, employability skills development classes, workshops and events, work experience, internship opportunities, and employment or postgraduate opportunities. Our Activities: We achieve our mission by:

1. One-on-one Career Advice and Guidance:

Career advice is a key element of our service where we aim to provide accurate, impartial career advice based on the individual's needs and circumstances. A number of options are available to students:

• Careers advice meetings by appointment with an experienced careers advisor where students can discuss a wide variety of topics from CV’s to interviews to general advice on career paths.
• Careers advice is most effective when delivered face-to-face. Where a visit to the Employability Service is not practicable (e.g. out of term) we will endeavor to facilitate students by the use of telephone or Skype. We are unable to offer in-depth advice by email, however, general queries can be emailed to [email protected]

2. Career and employability initiatives

• Deliver general employability skills workshops over the academic year covering topics such as career planning, CV writings, job interviews, job search, and the application process.
• In partnership with academic departments and other departments, the Employability Services offers a suite of employability & career-related classes and workshops. These workshops are customised to meet the needs of the cohort of students of that department.
• Learn a new language. We offer French, German and Spanish Classes. For more information contact the employability service at [email protected]

3. Access to graduate employers and job opportunities

The Employability Service promotes contact with employers and other opportunity providers in order to promote the skills and attributes of students to those organisations. During the academic year, we organise a series of career activities. These include:

• Career Fairs provide opportunities for students to meet employers who want to recruit MDX graduates. A list of companies attending these fairs is emailed to students.
• On-campus company presentations where an employer will outline the opportunities in their organisations to students. Our expectations from MDX students:

In order to offer relevant, timely, and high-quality services, we ask that students:

• Show respect and courtesy to our staff and be honest with us about your support needs.
• Give feedback, when requested, about your experience of the service so that we can evaluate and improve services provided.
• Attend workshops and presentations on time and contribute to discussions where appropriate.
• Consider what can be realistically achieved during a career’s advice appointment (30-minute session) and attend appointments on time.
• Inform us as soon as possible if you are unable to keep an appointment to help us keep waiting times down to a minimum and make that time available to another student.
• Assist us in our work collecting information on graduates’ career progression by responding to the graduate destinations survey which we conduct 6 months after graduation

Did you miss the Future Fintech Champion Programme 2023?
Get inspired by Mary Oladimeji's insights on why you should apply for the next FFC program!
Mary shared valuable takeaways from the recent FFC, highlighting the program's benefits and how it can empower you in your career journey.

The FFC program was a great opportunity to expand my professional network by connecting with industry leaders from top organisations in Mauritius.
As an international student, the program offered a rare opportunity to understand the Mauritian and African Fintech landscape through attending workshops, roundtables, and organising Fintech events within our schools.
As a Law student, the program also pushed me to think innovatively about Fintech solutions and regulatory challenges, particularly within Africa.
Beyond networking, I learned important skills like project management and leadership, through our cohort's organisation of the first-ever Fintech Youth Summit in Mauritius.
Regardless of your major, the FFC program exposes you to various perspectives that develop your understanding of the Fintech field and its career prospects. I wholeheartedly recommend it to any student passionate about finance and Fintech.

Are you ready to take your skills to the next level?
