Project Scientist at work with the readout electronics. Two cabinets full of wiring to connect so that the sky signals get amplified. Each of those cables will carry messages from thousands of galaxies and Galactic star-formation clumps to us.

TolTEC PI and Project Manager working on modifications to the Dilution Fridge. We have been working on this since last week, so that we can clear a problem and go down from 4K to 145mK (-273C/-459.4F). Good progress here!!!

It was a massive sprint to wrap up the installation before the telescope closed for its annual holiday break but we managed to do it. If all goes well, in about three weeks TolTEC team members will return to cold and sensitive detectors. We are so grateful for all the help and support and hospitality that we received during the installation process. Now we’ll take a bit of rest to recover for the next big push. We wish everyone a wonderful end to 2021 and we hope that TolTEC and the LMT will be part of what brings you some joy in 2022. ¡Felices fiestas a todos!

La instalación de TolTEC en el GTM es “ligeramente” más complicada que colgar las luces navideñas en el techo de tu casa. En nuestras próximas publicaciones, con ayuda de Grant Wilson y el equipo de instrumentistas de TolTEC, te explicaremos paso a pasito los retos (y aventuras) por las que han pasado un grupo de estudiantes e investigadores que se encuentran trabajando a todo v***r en la cima de una montaña mexicana. Installing TolTEC on the GTM/LMT is "slightly" more complicated than hanging your Xmas lights on the roof. In our next posts, Grant Wilson and the TolTEC instrument team will help us explain step by step the challenges (and adventures) that a group of students and researchers have gone through while working full steam at the top of a Mexican mountain.
