The Summer Law Institute in Guanajuato, Mexico was administered by a consortium of four law schools that included: Southwestern Law School, Texas Tech University School of Law, Universidad de Guanajuato Facultad de Derecho, and University of New Mexico School of Law. The program was founded in 1989, and offered a thorough introduction to Mexican Law and International Law subjects related to the Un

ited States and Latin America. Our final summer program took place in 2016 (our 27th year of operation). trading partner and strategic geopolitical ally, the interest among law students for a study abroad experience in Mexico diminished as law school costs increased and concerns of safety (whether real or imagined) increased over the years. We LOVE to hear from the hundreds of alumni from our program, and hope you will leave us a note of your most cherished memories of the program. And if you’re not an alumni of the program, leave us a note anyway!

Today GOOGLE celebrates what would have been the 99th birthday of the man credited with popularizing wrestling in Mexico, the one and only Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta. More commonly known as “El Santo” (The Saint), this legendary, silver-masked luchador wrestled for nearly five decades and is remembered as one of the greatest sports figures in Mexican history. Through his appearance in film and as the subject of many comic books, he became a cultural icon, representing justice and the fight against evil.

Legend has it that El Santo never removed his silver mask even at home and had a special mask for eating. He went to great lengths to protect his identity, particularly when traveling. He finally removed his mask to reveal his identity on the Mexican talk show, Contrapunto. A week after his unmasking, El Santo died on February 5, 1984. His funeral was one of the biggest in Mexican history, attended by family, friends, and his many fans. Shortly thereafter, a statue of El Santo was erected in his hometown of Tulancingo.

Per his wishes, El Santo was buried wearing his iconic silver

The Summer Law Institute closed its doors on another successful summer this past week. We couldn't have done it without a wonderful staff!! Thanks to Scarlett Jaramillo Nuňo (left) and Mrs. Joan Hicks de Romero (who has worked with the program for most of its 27-year history).

Thanks as well to the generous faculty and staff at the Universidad de Guanajuato, our program faculty and, of course, our wonderful students!!

Professor of Law and Program Director

Today's field trip: Cañada de la Virgen, a recently excavated Otomi archaeological site (active from approximately late 400's to 1000 AD). Sitting in what was thought to be a sacred bath atop one of the pyramids on the site.
