Speaker biography
# # # Biography: Dr. Ummikalsom Abidin
Dr. Ummikalsom Abidin is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor Bahru. She obtained her Ph.D. in Microengineering and Nanoelectronics from the Institute of Microengineering and Nanoelectronics (IMEN), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2016, Master of Engineering (Mechanical) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2007 and Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours), Universiti Tenaga Nasional in 2002. Her research expertise lies in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and microfluidics, with a growing emphasis on sustainable engineering and energy-efficient systems. She is actively involved in sustainability initiatives and serves as the Green Manager at FME, contributing to sustainability-driven programmes and participating in energy audit consultation projects between 2024 and 2025.
Dr. Ummikalsom plays a significant leadership role in international academic engagement. She is currently the Manager of CAMPUS Asia Plus at UTM, and previously served as a visiting lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, Chikushi Campus, Kyushu University for 2023–2024. Her active involvement in outbound and inbound global students’ mobility programmes (Summer School, Spring Seminar, Cross-Straits Symposium) for the collaborations and education exchanges under CAMPUS Asia Plus - Energy, Environment, Science and Technology (EEST) programme between Kyushu University, Pusan National University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
In addition, she has been actively involved in inbound global learning initiatives through A Global Learning Experience in Malaysia (AGLEIM) Summer School programme, a collaboration between Kookmin University and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, since 2019. She served as the Head of Project for the AGLEIM Summer School (2023–2024), where she led the design and implementation of immersive academic and cultural learning experiences for international students. This role further strengthened her expertise in managing global academic programmes and fostering meaningful cross-cultural engagement.
