19世紀中後期至20世紀，許多華人女性從中國南來，在新加坡與馬來西亞帶髮修行、持長齋守貞。她們是早期新馬華人社會中，重要卻鮮為人知的女性群體。

她們終身茹素，早晚誦經、守貞不嫁、帶髮修行，並未正式剃度為比丘尼、信仰融合儒、釋、道思想。她们以方言群與道脈建立跨地域的女性網絡，並透過手工藝、法事及信眾供養維持生活。「生有養，死有葬」——是她們彼此守護的承諾。

【Faith & Legacy Forum SERIES 2026 | What are the “Vegetarian Nuns” of Singapore and Malaysia? 】

From the late 19th to the 20th century, many Chinese women migrated from China to Singapore and Malaysia, where they practised religious life as vegetarians and celibates. They were an important yet often overlooked group of women in early Chinese communities.

They followed a lifelong vegetarian diet, chanted scriptures, remained unmarried and practised without formally becoming Buddhist nuns. Their beliefs drew from Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism. They also built networks across dialect groups and religious lineages, supporting themselves through handicrafts, religious services and donations. “Care in life, and a proper funeral in death” reflected their commitment to one another.

As times changed and few successors remained, traditional vegetarian in Singapore and Malaysia gradually disappeared. Join us for a talk to explore this history.

8月21-23日，馬來西亞大學人間佛教研究中心顧問有燈法師、研究員黃裕端博士赴臺灣佛光山寺，參與「紀念星雲大師百歲誕辰人間佛教學術研討會」暨「第十屆星雲大師人間佛教理論實踐學術研討會」。

研討會匯聚來自海內外的專家學者與佛教界人士，圍繞星雲大師的人間佛教思想、當代社會實踐、海外弘法、教育發展及未來展望等主題展開學術交流。三天議程包括開幕式暨主題講演、多場分論壇、學術交流，以及綜合座談與閉幕式，共同從理論與實踐層面探討人間佛教的發展與當代意義。

8月21日晚間，研討會進入「馬來西亞、日本佛光山弘法史」論壇环节。有燈法師以〈人間佛教的跨國實踐：佛光山在臺馬文化與教育交流中的角色〉為題，黃裕端博士則以〈馬來西亞佛光山文化的本土化與跨國文化弘法〉為題進行學術發表。兩位發表圓滿，並與現場學者進行了學術交流。

From 21st to 23rd August, Ven. Dr. You Deng, Advisor of the Centre for Humanistic Buddhism Studies at the University of Malaya, and Research Fellow Dr. Wong Yee Tuan attended the “Commemoration of Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s Centenary Academic Conference on Humanistic Buddhism” and “The 10th Academic Conference on the Theory and Practice of Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s Humanistic Buddhism” at Fo Guang Shan Monastery, Taiwan.

The conference brought together scholars, experts, and members of the Buddhist community from Malaysia and around the world for academic discussions on Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s Humanistic Buddhist thought, contemporary social practice, overseas Dharma propagation, education, and future development. The three-day programme featured an opening ceremony and keynote presentations, multiple academic forums, scholarly exchanges, as well as a concluding panel discussion and closing ceremony, providing opportunities to explore the development and contemporary significance of Humanistic Buddhism from both theoretical and practical perspectives.

On the evening of 21st August , the conference featured the special forum “Dharma Propagation History of Fo Guang Shan in Malaysia and Japan.” Ven. Dr. You Deng presented a paper titled “The Transnational Practice of Humanistic Buddhism: Fo Guang Shan’s Role in Cultural and Educational Exchange between Taiwan and Malaysia,” while Dr. Wong Yee Tuan presented “The Localization of Fo Guang Shan’s Culture in Malaysia and the Transnational Propagation of Buddhist Centre.” Both presentations were successfully completed, followed by academic exchanges with fellow scholars.
