Ask an Actuary: Insights from a Leading Actuary in Malaysia

On 1 July 2026, the IASDA successfully hosted the “Ask an Actuary: Insights from a Leading Actuary in Malaysia” session in collaboration with the Society of Actuaries (SOA). The event provided students with valuable exposure to the SOA actuarial qualification pathway, career opportunities in the actuarial profession, and practical insights shared by experienced actuaries from the industry.

The interactive session was well received, with students actively engaging in the Q&A and gaining a clearer understanding of the professional examination journey, scholarships, and future career prospects in the insurance and actuarial sectors. The event also inspired students by showcasing real-world experiences from practicing actuaries.

A key highlight of the event was the SOA scholarship lucky draw, where several of our students won 100% SOA exam fee waivers for the Exam P (Probability) and Exam FM (Financial Mathematics) professional examinations. This prize motivates our students to pursue professional actuarial qualifications.

Overall, the event was a great success, strengthening our partnership with the Society of Actuaries while enhancing students’ awareness, motivation, and readiness to embark on the actuarial professional pathway.

The MASA Hackathon 2026 Grand Finale marked a major milestone for UCSI University, with the Institute of Actuarial Science and Data Analytics (IASDA) proud to serve as the official venue partner for this national event.

This year set new benchmarks:
☑️ Record participation, with 63 teams (258 participants) from 22 universities nationwide
☑️ A strong 82.54% submission rate, reflecting resilience and technical capability under pressure
☑️ Innovative, data-driven solutions addressing climate risk – one of today’s most urgent global challenges

From this competitive pool, the top seven teams advanced to present their ideas at the Grand Finale hosted at UCSI.

Congratulations to all finalists and winners. Through initiatives like this, UCSI University continues to support the development of future actuaries and data scientists, driving innovation and impact in Malaysia and beyond.
