Molecular Medicine University Malaya

Molecular Medicine University Malaya Welcome to the Department of Molecular Medicine, University Malaya.

The Department of Molecular Medicine extends a warm welcome to all visitors, prospective students and collaborators. The Department of Biochemistry, founded in 1963, is one of the first departments established in the University of Malaya. For the next four decades, the Department of Biochemistry was the sole department at the university providing Biochemistry education for scores of doctors, denti

sts, nurses and other healthcare providers. Many hundreds of biochemists have also come through this department, earning honours and higher degrees and honing research skills to contribute further to the nation’s scientific aspirations. In 2002, a new name, Department of Molecular Medicine, was adopted when the Biomedical Science Unit, which runs the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (B.Biomed.Sc) degree programme at the Faculty of Medicine merged with the Department of Biochemistry. In January 2013, the Department of Molecular Medicine became an independent entity, separating from the Department of Biomedical Science.

It’s hard to believe it’s already been two weeks since our Department of Molecular Medicine teambuilding day!!

A massive shout-out to our Wellness Team for organizing an unforgettable trip to Sri Damai Resort, Kalumpang on November 29th. The goal was to enhance our working relationships and strengths. We definitely enhanced... something.

The adventure began right after our 1-hour bus ride, as we all piled into the back of a pickup lorry to enter the resort. It was breezy, a bit bumpy, and the perfect way to take in all the green, rural scenery!

We arrived and were told to get ready. We thought, "for breakfast?"

Nope.

Our very own Dr. Fazril immediately put us to work with a surprise strength workout. 🏋️‍♀️ Seeing colleagues choosing between 1kg and 2.5kg weights, knowing what was coming, was a sight to behold. The torture... we mean, exercise... was intense. Let’s just say "DOMS" was the most searched word in the department for the next three days. We all walked very carefully around the lab.

After surviving the workout, we split into Team Red and Team Blue for some fun games. The competition was fierce, but in the end, Team Red claimed victory! (We're not saying it's because our HOD was on their team, but... congratulations anyway! 😉)

The absolute highlight? The 'recovery session'. We had the beautiful, cool sungai (river) practically to ourselves. It was the perfect reward after a morning of intense (and painful) "fun."

From the lorry ride to the lunges, it was a fantastic day of bonding, laughter, and discovering muscles we didn't know we had. We certainly came back stronger (once the soreness faded!).

On hot days like today, we're all probably daydreaming about being in that water again!

Our department has recently successfully concluded the Aptamer Development Workshop 2024, held from September 24-26! This intensive 3-day workshop aimed to equip participants with both theoretical and practical knowledge in aptamer development, focusing on the in-vitro selection technology, Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment (SELEX), and NGS data analysis.

We were delighted to welcome participants not just from Universiti Malaya, but also from other institutions including USIM and USM Kelantan. Their active participation and enthusiasm truly enriched the learning experience. We hope all attendees have gained valuable insights from both the theoretical sessions and hands-on practical work, which will undoubtedly contribute to their ongoing and future research projects.

Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to our co-sponsors, Bio-Diagnostics Sdn Bhd and Apical Scientific Sdn. Bhd., for their generous support and for sharing informative and insightful talks during the workshop. Their contributions significantly enhanced the overall workshop experience.

A special thank you to our Postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Subhashini Rajkumal who has spearheaded this workshop alongside the awesome organizing committee. Their dedication and tireless efforts were instrumental in making this workshop a resounding success!

We're excited about the positive feedback received and look forward to hosting more engaging workshops in the future. Stay tuned for more exciting events from our department!
