Founded in 1821 as the world’s first mechanics institute, Heriot-Watt has a rich heritage and an established reputation as a leading research-led university. Now, our communities of scholars come from across the world and for a purpose: leaders in ideas and solutions, they deliver innovation and educational excellence in business, engineering, design and the physical, social and life sciences. Her

iot-Watt University Malaysia’s purpose-built campus opened to students in Putrajaya in September 2014 and the formal launch took place on 12 February 2015. The £35m campus sits on 4.8 acres in a stunning lakeside location providing exceptional educational facilities in an excellent environment, close to the Putrajaya marina and its modern leisure and sports facilities. This is a fantastic green area, part of Putrajaya Lake’s ‘green continuum’, and the building design is a conscious reference. The ‘green campus’ is remarkable for having the first living grass roof of its kind in Malaysia. At 300 metres long and 30 metres wide, it is the most recognisable sustainable feature of the campus. The roof shades the naturally ventilated spaces below, reduces thermal transmittance, and acts as an observation deck, accessible by glass lift. Other environmentally friendly, passive design features include campus lighting ‘powered’ by the maximum use of natural daylight, a rainwater harvesting system and optimised air-conditioning and thermal control systems. The campus is a state-of-the-art teaching and learning environment, reflecting our status as a leading provider of high-quality, professionally orientated education, knowledge transfer and research. Architect-designed in conjunction with educational design specialists, the campus has been developed with the current generation of students in mind, to create a dynamic, exciting place, which maximises the potential of its setting for study and student life. Our roots are in Scotland, our ambition and reach are truly international. Together with our alumni, civic community and industry partners, we transform people, society and the world we live in. We specialise in the following fields:

• Foundation

Meet Zarir, our Watt Achiever ⚡

At Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, being EmPOWERed is about more than academic success. It is about having the courage to take initiative, embracing every experience as a chance to grow, and using your strengths to make a difference. Zarir reflects this through his perseverance, compassion, and drive to create meaningful impact.

Alongside his teammate, Zarir collaborated with ReFUGEE Future Fund and raised RM2,500 through IMPACT bazaar and crowdfunding efforts for FUGEE School KL. Beyond fundraising, his journey also came with setbacks that shaped his perspective. After contesting twice for the Treasurer position in the HWUMSA elections without winning, Zarir realised that leadership is never defined by a title alone. Real leadership comes from continuing to serve, inspire, and positively impact others regardless of recognition. Guided by the intention to benefit those around him, Zarir believes in leading with integrity, creating purpose-driven initiatives, and becoming someone others can learn from. Through the EmPOWER programme, he discovered that rejection is not the end of the journey, but often a redirection towards greater purpose.

For Zarir, success should not only be measured through numbers, profit, or achievements. While those things matter, the most meaningful outcomes are the trust we build, the hope we give, and the lives we impact along the way.

We are committed to nurturing future-ready leaders with purpose at their core. Through the EmPOWER programme, students are empowered to turn their ideas into real-world action that creates lasting positive change.

Congratulations to Professor Glenn Hitchman for representing our university at the 15th Bial Foundation Symposium, Behind and Beyond the Brain, held in Porto, Portugal.

Professor Hitchman presented his research titled “Sensory isolation in floatation tanks as a method of promoting extrasensory perception (ESP) phenomena”, exploring how environments of deep relaxation, silence, and reduced sensory input may influence consciousness and intuitive experiences. Using carefully controlled experimental methods, the study examined whether altered states achieved during floatation could enhance intuitive accuracy. While overall findings were close to chance, participants who experienced deeper altered states demonstrated stronger intuitive performance, highlighting the potential of floatation tanks as a valuable tool for advancing research in consciousness, perception, and human experience.

The symposium brought together international researchers, clinicians, and scholars to explore the boundaries of human consciousness and the relationship between mind and brain. Bringing together perspectives from psychology, neuroscience, medicine, philosophy, and anthropology, the event examined how consciousness may extend beyond conventional biological explanations.

Great ideas took centre stage at the 2026 Postgraduate Research Conference, where PhD students from across disciplines, spanning the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS), School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure & Society (EGIS), School of Social Sciences (SoSS) and School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (MACS), gathered to present their work and exchange insights.

The event opened with a welcoming address by Professor John See, Director of Research and Enterprise, who encouraged students to stay curious and bold in their research journeys while celebrating outstanding achievements across programmes.

Dr Samini Subramaniam, delivered a compelling keynote titled Your Journey, Your Pace: From Learning to Real-World Impact. She reflected on her path through academia and industry, sharing honest perspectives on navigating difficult career decisions and creating meaningful impact.

The conference featured 19 PhD and 8 undergraduate presentations across Data Analytics and Computing, Sustainability, Humanities, and Physical and Material Science, highlighting the breadth and depth of ongoing research.

Participants also gained practical insights from Dr Jessica Ho’s session on turning research into clear and impactful presentations.

The event concluded with an award ceremony recognising the best undergraduate projects and PhD presentations, celebrating excellence and innovation across the community.

Meet Nina, our Watt Achiever ⚡

At Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, being EmPOWERed goes beyond academics. It is about taking initiative, embracing purpose, and creating meaningful impact. Nina brings this to life through her dedication to service and action. She worked with Jing Sun Welfare Society, supporting a children’s home that provides essential care for those in need. Together with her team, Heartbeats of Hope, she raised over RM5,000 in just three months, showing how collective effort can drive real change.

Nina believes that growth is not only personal, but something we can inspire in others. You do not have to feel ready to begin. Sometimes, doing it scared is the first step towards something meaningful. Through the EmPOWER programme, she gained more than practical skills. She learned that bravery and small steps can lead to lasting impact and a better tomorrow.

Let’s hear from Nadia about her internship experience at Electrolux Sdn Bhd.

"I interned with Electrolux in the People Services & Solutions (HR) department. Over the course of three months, I supported HR operations across several regions, including Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, the UAE, Morocco, and occasionally Malaysia. It was a fast-paced and high-volume environment, which gave me hands-on exposure to regional HR processes and systems. My role involved working on service tickets, updating internal records, and coordinating with various teams to ensure timely and accurate support for employees. I also had the chance to familiarise myself with ServiceNow and gained valuable experience navigating corporate HR workflows in a multinational setting.

This internship sharpened my communication, time management, and problem-solving skills, while giving me valuable insights into how large organisations manage employee services globally. Despite some challenges, I appreciated the learning experience and the chance to contribute meaningfully. It also inspired me to further explore HR and be more mindful of the work culture and leadership I want to grow under."

We are proud to see Nadia gaining valuable international exposure in HR operations and corporate systems. Her journey highlights the importance of adaptability, cross-cultural collaboration, and real-world learning in a global workplace.
