A proud moment for Nottingham University Business School Malaysia.

Congratulations to Amirun Haqqim bin Eldeen Husaini on becoming the first doctoral candidate from NUBS Malaysia to receive the prestigious DAAD Bi-National Doctoral Scholarship - one of Germany’s most competitive academic awards.

Already a recipient of the University of Nottingham Malaysia PhD Scholarship, Haqqim’s work is now recognised at both institutional and international levels. His research, at the intersection of computational social science and political psychology, explores how polarising narratives emerge and spread in digital spaces.

Through this scholarship, he will undertake a funded research stay at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, working with Professor Stefan Pickl and Professor Max Moll from the COMTESSA research group, while continuing under the supervision of Professor Yvonne Seow Hsin Vonn at NUBS Malaysia.

From Malaysia to Munich, we look forward to seeing where this journey leads.

A thoughtful and engaging session on purpose-driven entrepreneurship took place at Nottingham University Business School on 20 April 2026, as we welcomed Mr Carlos Fernández to our Managing Innovation & Entrepreneurship postgraduate class.

Representing Take The Leap, Carlos shared his journey of building a venture grounded in social impact and human connection. His insights offered a refreshing perspective on entrepreneurship—moving beyond traditional profit-driven models towards creating inclusive spaces that foster meaningful relationships and positive social change.

The session provided valuable real-world context, highlighting how intentional communities, authentic conversations, and shared experiences can form the foundation of impactful ventures.

Engagements like these reflect our ongoing commitment to bridging academic theory with industry practice, while exposing students to diverse and purpose-driven entrepreneurial pathways.

We would also like to thank Dr Risky Harisa Haslan and Dr Hoh Chin Chin for facilitating this insightful session.

Service Tax is something students often encounter in everyday transactions and learn about in class, but understanding how it operates in practice offers a very different perspective.

On 30 March 2026, we had the pleasure of hosting a guest lecture on Service Tax, delivered by Liew Li Lih, Senior Manager at PwC Malaysia, and organised by Dr Too Shaw Warn.

The session provided a clear and structured overview of key areas, including scope, registration, compliance, exemptions, and special rules. Drawing on her professional experience, Ms. Liew also shared practical insights from real client scenarios, offering students a deeper appreciation of how Service Tax is applied and managed in practice.

Interactive elements, such as short quizzes and case-based discussions, kept the session engaging and encouraged students to think more critically about the subject.

Our sincere thanks to Ms. Liew for sharing her expertise and for bringing industry perspectives into the classroom.

A proud moment for Nottingham University Business School Malaysia.

Our student team, Thashwin Kalithas and Fiona Ting Xin from The Turing Point, has achieved Second Runner-Up (Top 3 globally) at Chartered Institute of Marketing’s global student competition, The Pitch.

They are the only team from Malaysia, and the only team from Asia, to secure a place in the global Top 3.

The challenge required students to address misconceptions surrounding AI among UK SMEs, an area that demands not only creativity, but clarity of thought, strategic discipline, and the ability to translate complex ideas into meaningful and persuasive narratives.

As the team reflected:
“Marketing is often seen as just ‘selling,’ but this competition proved that it is truly about problem-solving, strategic agility, and the power of a well-crafted narrative.”

The team also expressed their appreciation to Dr Shu Han Tan, for her guidance throughout the competition, from sharing critical market insights and research perspectives to dedicating extra time to practice sessions and refining their strategy and delivery. They further acknowledged Dr Kenny Wong Meng Seng for his valuable industry insights, which helped align their proposal with real-world expectations.

This achievement reflects not only the outcome, but the level of thinking, resilience, and commitment demonstrated throughout the journey.

A well-deserved recognition on a global stage.

On 25 March, our digital marketing classroom felt a little different.

We had the privilege of welcoming Mr. Graeme Tan Jie, a content creator as well as Account Manager at Blankstate (Creative Agency), who shared not just industry insights, but the realities of navigating both sides of the influencer landscape.

Rather than theory, he unpacked how influencer marketing actually works; how brands collaborate with creators, what KPIs truly matter, and how campaigns are evaluated beyond surface metrics. A highlight was the Mister Potato collaboration with members of SEVENTEEN, offering a glimpse into the scale and strategy behind such partnerships.

But what stayed with many of us was something quieter.

When discussing burnout and the pressure to constantly create, he shared:
"If you chase the butterfly, it will always remain just out of reach. But if you patiently build your own garden, the butterfly may find its way to you".
In a space driven by trends, speed, and visibility, this felt almost counterintuitive - yet deeply necessary.

It also raises an important question for how we teach digital marketing. Frameworks such as source credibility or parasocial interaction remain valuable, but on their own, they risk presenting an overly tidy version of reality. They explain outcomes, but not always the conditions behind them - the creative fatigue, the pressure to stay relevant, and the constant negotiation between authenticity and trends.

Bringing industry voices into the classroom allows students to engage with that complexity. It reminds them that digital marketing is not only about applying models, but about understanding the people and processes behind the content itself.

And perhaps more importantly, it leaves them with a quieter insight, that in a landscape defined by immediacy, there is still value in building something that lasts.

Every path holds a story worth telling.

Across the NUBS Malaysia community, women continue to learn, lead, and shape the future in their own ways, sometimes boldly, sometimes quietly, but always with purpose.

International Women’s Day is also a reminder that every voice matters, and that the journey toward equality and opportunity continues.

Today we celebrate those journeys, and the voices that remind us progress is built one story at a time.

We are proud to share that our student team, The Turing Point, Thashwin A/L Kalithas and Fiona Ting Xin (BSc Marketing and Management, Year 2) has progressed to the Finals of The IBM Pitch 2026, representing the University of Nottingham Malaysia.

Organised by the CIM - The Chartered Insititute of Marketing, The Pitch is a global competition designed to discover the marketers of the future. This year’s industry partner, IBM, challenged students to address one of today’s most pressing business conversations, misconceptions surrounding AI. The competition invited students to develop a bold, content-led campaign to reshape this narrative, positioning IBM as a trusted, practical and responsible AI expert.

This was not about selling a product, but about building confidence, trust and relevance through strategic communication.

The team extends their sincere appreciation to Dr Shu Han Tan for her mentorship and guidance throughout the journey, and to Dr Kenny Wong Meng Seng for his valuable advice and insights.

At NUBS Malaysia, we remain committed to equipping our students with the strategic thinking and industry awareness required to engage meaningfully with real-world challenges. We are grateful to CIM for providing such a powerful global platform.

Congratulations to Thashwin and Fiona on this remarkable achievement. We look forward to the final round!
