The Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BioTech UPM) was established on 1st August 2004 with the merger of two departments, the Department of Biotechnology (from the Faculty of Food Science and Biotechnology) and the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology (from the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies). With the formation of BioTech UPM, all activities involving biotec
hnology in UPM are organised under one administration. Since its formation, the Faculty has four departments:
- Department of Bioprocess Technology
- Department of Cell & Molecular Biology
- Department of Biochemistry
- Department of Microbiology
Each department offers core and elective courses for its own programme as well as for other programmes. Besides teaching, the academic staff members are also involved actively in research, extension services and consultancy. Although it is a new faculty, all the academic staff members are very experienced and have broad scientific knowledge in their respective fields. BioTech UPM has various expertise and facilities to support teaching and research as well as to provide professional services in all fields involving biotechnology. Currently, the Faculty offers four academic programmes at the Bachelor’s degree level. These programmes are Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology), Bachelor of Science (Honours) majoring either in Biochemistry or Microbiology, and Bachelor of Science (Honours) majoring in Biochemistry and Microbiology. For post-graduate studies, the Faculty offers the Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes. The fields of study offered for the MS and PhD programmes are Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering, Industrial Biotechnology, Food and Enzyme Biotechnology, Animal Cell Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, Structural Biology, Microbiology and Nanobiotechnology.
