FUNAAB’s 106th Inaugural Lecturer Calls for Improved Animal Welfare, Gives Department ₦1 Million

By Emeka Oluka & Bolanle Olawepo

The 106th Inaugural Lecturer of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof. Adetola Ajadi on behalf of his siblings, announced a ₦1 million donation to the Best Graduating Student in the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Theriogenology, to be awarded at the University’s 33rd Convocation Ceremony.

Prof. Ajadi, a renowned scholar in Veterinary Surgery and Theriogenology, made the announcement today, October 29, 2025, while delivering his lecture titled “The Silent Voices: Recognizing and Relieving Pain in Animals for Better Welfare.”

In his insightful presentation, Prof. Ajadi made a passionate appeal for improved animal welfare through enhanced scientific understanding and evidence-based policy reforms. He emphasised that recognising and relieving pain and stress in animals are vital for promoting better care, ethical treatment, and productivity.

Drawing from extensive research and clinical experience, Prof. Ajadi noted that animals experience pain as acutely as humans, even though they cannot verbally express it. He explained that physiological and behavioural indicators such as altered posture, abnormal vocalisation, and increased heart rates are reliable signs of distress that demand urgent attention from veterinarians and handlers.

He explored pharmacological interventions for managing pain in animals, including ketamine, tramadol, midazolam, and gabapentin. While acknowledging tramadol’s widespread use, he noted that its effectiveness varies across different species. He, however, identified gabapentin as a promising non-opioid analgesic, particularly valuable in pre-surgical pain management where opioid use is restricted.

Addressing chronic pain conditions, Prof. Ajadi highlighted osteoarthritis as a major concern in both human and animal health. His studies revealed that erythrocyte sedimentation rate and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio are affordable and effective biomarkers for monitoring disease progression in dogs. He also shared preliminary findings that snail mucin may possess disease-modifying properties, pending further clinical validation.

Prof. Ajadi also discussed the correlation between pain and stress, noting that both are closely linked and can exacerbate one another. He advised that administering gabapentin before veterinary visits can significantly reduce anxiety in cats, while his research on cattle showed that rough handling during transportation elevates stress hormones and weakens immunity.

Earlier in his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, commended Prof. Ajadi for his academic excellence, impactful research, and commitment to advancing veterinary medicine. He described the lecturer as a complete academic and a foremost authority in Veterinary Medicine whose work continues to add value to scholarship and animal welfare globally.

COLENG Inducts 2024/2025 Graduating Engineers into NSE

… As Experts Urge Inductees to Bridge the Gap Between Campus, Workplace

By Bolanle Olawepo

The College of Engineering (COLENG), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), in collaboration with the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), today, October 30, 2025, formally inducted the graduating students of the 2024/2025 Academic Session as Graduate Members of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. The event, themed “Campus to Workplace: Every Trainee Engineer’s Dream,” marked a defining moment in the professional journey of the young engineers.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, at the ceremony was the former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Kola Adebayo, who congratulated the inductees on behalf of the University Management. He lauded the College for its unwavering commitment to producing competent Engineers equipped with the knowledge and skills to address real-world challenges.

The Vice-Chancellor, however, charged the inductees to be innovative, visionary, and solution-oriented, stressing that their training at FUNAAB has prepared them not just for today’s problems, but for those yet to emerge. “You have been trained not just to solve today’s problems, but to find solutions to problems that have not yet been created,” he stated. “FUNAAB stands tall as one of the six universities in Nigeria fully powered by solar energy. You have learned in a live renewable energy environment, use that privilege to your advantage.”

He appreciated the staff for their tireless dedication to nurturing some of the nation's brightest minds, assuring them that their efforts would continue to yield great rewards.

Delivering the Keynote Lecture, Engr. Osinachukwu Nwosu, Site Plant Manager at Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc, spoke extensively on the theme, underscoring the importance of adaptability, teamwork, humility, and continuous learning in navigating the transition from academia to the professional world.

“In the classroom, problems are well-defined and data is clear,” he noted. “But in the real world, challenges are often messy, data is incomplete, and priorities often conflict. That’s where true Engineering begins, where logic meets uncertainty, and creativity meets constraints.”

Sharing insights from his professional journey, Engr. Nwosu advised the new Engineers to prioritise competence over credentials, stay curious, and continuously improve themselves while earning the trust and respect of their teams.

Earlier in his Opening Remarks, the Dean, COLENG, Engr. (Prof.) Adebayo Badejo, congratulated the inductees, charging them to uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity, and professionalism. He emphasised that the induction was not merely a ceremony, but a call to responsibility and lifelong excellence.

The valedictory speech was delivered by Omoniyi Damilola, President of the Nigerian Universities Engineering Students’ Association (NUESA), FUNAAB Chapter, who reflected on the shared experiences and aspirations of the Graduating Class.

Highpoint was the presentation of awards and prizes to deserving students, like Makinde Oluwatobi of the Department of Mechanical Engineering who emerged as the Best Graduating Student in the College with a CGPA of 4.78, while Adesanya Rhoda Arinade of the Department of Agricultural and Bio-Resources Engineering received the award for Best Graduating Female Student.

Departmental and special recognition awards were also presented to other outstanding students for their academic excellence and contributions to the growth of the College.
