From Lagos to Vienna – A Journey of Resilience and Purpose

Today, Mosunmola Akinbobola, Gender and Human Rights Advisor at Women for Peace and Gender Equality Initiative (WOPEGEE), landed safely in Vienna, Austria – a significant milestone not just in her professional journey but also in the story of unyielding determination and purpose-driven advocacy.

The road to Vienna was not smooth. From the moment she received her invitation to the prestigious International Civilian Peacebuilding Training Programme (IPT) on Intersectional Gender Work and Peacebuilding, Mosunmola faced one obstacle after another — financial limitations, technical glitches in communication, embassy delays, and looming deadlines that threatened to halt her participation. But true to the spirit of her work at WOPEGEE, she pressed on.

Despite a delayed visa process that pushed her to the edge of uncertainty, she remained proactive, personally visiting the DHL office, leveraging all available means of communication, and escalating the urgency of her situation. The morning she received her approved visa, Mosunmola exemplified grit: racing against time through Lagos traffic using a mix of speed boat, car, and motorcycle to make her flight. She arrived at the airport just in time and boarded her flight with her heart full of hope and her mission intact.

Her journey is not just personal — it reflects WOPEGEE’s unwavering commitment to amplifying women’s voices in peacebuilding, championing equality, and creating safe spaces for marginalized groups. As Mosunmola steps into this global training space, she carries with her the stories of Nigerian women, the hopes of countless grassroots advocates, and the strength of a movement that refuses to be silenced by challenges.

Her arrival in Vienna is more than just a landing — it’s a message: Resilience knows no borders, and when passion is powered by purpose, every barrier becomes a stepping stone.

WOPEGEE stands proud today, as one of its own takes this bold step forward on the international stage, not only to learn but also to contribute — to shape peace with gender justice at its core.

As part of efforts to commemorate the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), with support from CARE International, hosted a press conference on December 4, 2024, at Dennis Hotel, Abuja.

Themed "Building Consensus on VAPP Act: Strengthening and Ensuring Accountability on SGBV", the event brought together coordinators of VAPP implementation at the subnational level.

The key outcome was a strong Call to Action for:
✅ Increased funding (at least 0.5% of national tax) for GBV prevention and response.
✅ Strengthening the VAPP Act 2015 for effective enforcement and accountability.

Let’s work together for a violence-free and equitable society!

Happy International Women's Day 2024!

This year's theme, "Invest in Women Accelerate progress “ reminds us of the importance of unity, solidarity, and collective action in advancing gender equality and peace. As we reflect on the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead, let us recommit ourselves to the fight for justice, dignity, and equal rights for all. Together, we can break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create a more inclusive and equitable world for future generations. Let us stand together as allies, advocates, and agents of change, amplifying the voices of women and girls everywhere.

As we come together to celebrate International Women's Day under the theme "Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress," I am honored and humbled to be part of this inspiring event hosted by the Ogun State Ministry of Women’s affairs and Social Development in collaboration with Nigeria for Women Project

Today, we recognize the invaluable contributions of women to every aspect of society and reaffirm our commitment to investing in their empowerment, rights, and opportunities. It is through investing in women that we can truly accelerate progress towards gender equality, peace, and sustainable development.

WOPEGEE ED was a panelist, I am deeply encouraged by the dedication and resilience of women around the world who continue to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and drive positive change in their communities and beyond. From grassroots activists to corporate leaders, from educators to healthcare workers, from Mediators to development actors, women are leading the way towards a more just, inclusive, and equitable world for all.

Today's theme reminds us of the transformative power of investing in women – economically, politically, socially, and culturally. By providing women with access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and leadership roles, we not only empower them to fulfill their potential but also create ripple effects that benefit families, communities, and entire nations.

As we celebrate International Women's Day, let us recommit ourselves to the principles of gender equality, peace, and justice. Let us advocate for policies and initiatives that promote women's rights and address the root causes of gender inequality and violence. Let us amplify the voices of women, particularly those from marginalized and underrepresented groups, and ensure that their concerns and priorities are heard and addressed.

Together, let us harness the collective power of women and men alike to build a future where every woman and girl can thrive, contribute, and lead with dignity and respect. Let us invest in women today to accelerate progress for generations to come.

Happy International Women's Day!

With solidarity and hope. March 8, 2024

Happy International Women's Day from all us at WOPEGEE. We celebrate the uniqueness of women, and we appreciate the tremendous efforts from women around the world towards creating a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.

Did you know that bringing women into technology results in more creative solutions and promotes gender equality? The cashless policy in Nigeria has resulted in a fall back of progress we had on poverty reduction for women and other vulnerable groups.

On this International Women's Day, we celebrate all women and girls and especially CSOs who promote the advancement of transformative technology and digital education.

Have a wonderful celebration.

The purpose of the day is to uphold women’s achievements, recognize challenges, and focus greater attention on women’s rights and gender equality to mobilize all people to do their part.

Girls are leaders. Girls are change-makers. Girls are driving good and growth around the world. They are a fundamental source of transformational change for gender equality, and technology is a crucial tool to support their work, activism and leadership

This October 11 WOPEGEE is joining other civil society, International partners and girls around the world to celebrate International Day of the Girl Child under the theme "Digital generation. Our generation.” Together, we’re calling for equal access to the internet and digital devices for girls’ and targeted investments to facilitate opportunities for girls’ to safely and meaningfully access, use, lead and design technology.

Digital inclusion and literacy open new avenues to learning, earning and leading for girls, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the pandemic has also deepened the gender divide around connectivity and online safety, with girls facing economic and social barriers to internet and device access.

Happy International day of the girl child..Anjola and Olivia keep soaring. Proud of you Girls.

Today November 25, 2021 the 16 days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence begins and will end on December 10, 2021 under the Global Theme presented by the UN Secretary General UNITE Campaign: “Orange the World: End Violence Against Women Now”

As we commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we should note that 1 in 3 women have been abused in their lifetime. The COVID- 19 pandemic, humanitarian crises and incessant conflicts have fostered increase in the number of reported cases of violence against women and girls. Indeed, this pandemic in a pandemic will continue unabated if we do take action individually and collectively.

While pervasive, gender-based violence is not inevitable. It can and must be prevented. Stopping this violence starts with believing survivors, adopting comprehensive and inclusive approaches that tackle the root causes, transform harmful social norms, and empower women and girls. With survivor-centred essential services across policing, justice, health, and social sectors, and sufficient financing for the women’s rights agenda, we can end gender-based violence.
